Eastern Oklahoma State College nursing program earns recognition

January 22, 2021

DURANT, Okla. – The Eastern Oklahoma State College nursing program was recently recognized as one of the top associate nursing degree (ADN) programs in the region.

Eastern Oklahoma State College has been a partner institution in McCurtain County since the campus was established as a higher education center in 1976. In 2005, the higher education center became the Southeastern Oklahoma State University McCurtain County campus.

NursingProcess.org ranked Eastern as the No. 7 ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) program in the Southwest Region, in a listing which includes 268 two-year nursing programs. The Eastern program is also ranked No. 1 among colleges in Oklahoma.

At the present time, Eastern offers general education courses and select associate degree programs.

The Eastern Division of Health Sciences offers an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree (AAS) in Wilburton, McAlester and Idabel (McCurtain campus). Eastern’s most successful offering at McCurtain County is the nursing program, which was added in 1992 for students who are Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) or EMT – Paramedics, and then later expanded in 2007 to include freshman level courses with qualified full-time faculty.

Students who complete this degree are eligible to take the examinations necessary to qualify for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

“We are pleased that Eastern’s Nursing program continues to be recognized for offering an affordable, high quality education with student pass rates well above the national average,” said Eastern president Dr. Janet Wansick. “During this unprecedented pandemic, we all recognize and appreciate the life-changing works nurses are doing to help save lives. We’re proud to help train the next generation of nurses that are so desperately needed.”

“Southeastern is proud to partner with Eastern Oklahoma State College in McCurtain County,’’ said Southeastern president Thomas Newsom. “We both believe that providing students with quality learning opportunities is a top priority. The Eastern nursing program is to be commended for this well-deserved recognition.’’

The ranking was determined based on four factors, including graduates’ NCLEX-RN pass rates, academic quality, the institution’s reputation and affordability. NursingProcess.org is an independent educational resources provided for and maintained by passionate educators and healthcare professionals.
