Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is SOSU converting Student ID numbers?
- SOSU is converting student ID numbers to further protect the privacy of social security numbers. Using a random ID number reduces the possibility that social security numbers will be used to commit identify theft crimes.
- How do students find out their new student ID number after the conversion?
- Student ID numbers may be retrieved from CampusConnect, which will allow students to login using their SSN or their new ID number. Students may also contact the Registrar's Office in person to obtain their ID number. *The new ID number will be printed on student schedules, award letters, and billing statements.
- How will academic advisors find student ID numbers after the conversion?
- Advisors will receive a listing of their current advisees with corresponding ID numbers.
- What ID number will Blackboard, student email, and student PC logins use?
- *Beginning summer 2006, new usernames and passwords for student systems will be issued that do not use the SSN. Existing usernames and passwords for student systems will be valid through spring 2006.
- Will Student PIN numbers for CampusConnect change?
- No. Existing PIN numbers will be required along with the SSN or the new ID to access CampusConnect. Beginning summer 2006, students will be prompted to change their CampusConnect PIN once per semester for added security.
- How will the new ID be used?
-
- Students will use the new ID number to interact with administrative offices.
- Academic advisors will access academic records using the new ID number.
- Students who charge books at the bookstore will use the new ID number.
- Student schedules, statements, and award letters will print the new ID number.
- Students will be able to log into CampusConnect with the new ID number.
- ID cards printed after the conversion will print the new ID number.
- Will SOSU still use SSNs?
- SOSU requires SSNs to process federal financial aid, for tax reporting, payroll processing, and to report pertinent information to state and federal agencies.
- How does the new ID affect SOSU full time faculty and staff?
- Payroll and HR systems will continue to use the SSN internally as the primary identifier; however, SOSU's full time employees will receive a new employee ID. If an employee also has student records, their employee ID and student ID will be the same number.
- Do I need a new student or employee ID card printed?
- *No. Existing ID cards will still be valid; however, ID cards issued after the conversion will have the new ID number printed on them.
- Does the new ID number replace the library and cafeteria ID number?
- *Existing library and cafeteria IDs (beginning with "111740") will still work. All ID numbers and ID cards issued after the conversion will use the new random ID number.
- When will the new ID be available?
- The conversion will begin Thursday evening, March 9th, 2006, and will finish by Wednesday, March 15th (during spring break).
- How far back will the conversion go?
- All student records in the online system will be converted. The online records begin with the fall 1985 semester. Prior to 1985, most student records are on paper. Any of these students who re-enroll will be assigned a new random ID number.
- Will Ardmore Higher Education Center, SOSU – McCurtain County, and SOSU’s Continuing Education be affected?
- These student registration and billing systems will be converted; however, a student enrolled in two or more locations will receive the same ID number for use at all sites.
