I’ve been able to realize some of my goals and dreams in life and I can trace many of the positive experiences back to Southeastern.
I was born in Durant, moved to Boswell when I was three months old, then returned to Durant at age 14. I finished high school in Durant, where I played football and participated in the DECA program.

I like to say that I came to Southeastern on the “geriatric plan.” I have many wonderful memories of Southeastern, first as a student, then as an employee in the John Massey School of Business, and now as an employee in the Learning Center (LC). My journey began with the aggressive and friendly recruiting by Southeastern staff.
I had applied for admission to Southeastern as a transfer student. My plan was to take a few courses at Southeastern (because it was close to my home), so I could eventually transfer to a university in Texas where I planned to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English. This was my plan, but I soon came to realize and still believe that God’s plan for me was to complete this degree at Southeastern.

The first time I visited Southeastern was with my friend in 1981. I really liked the SE campus. I love the small town, the university with less distractions, the values, the academics, cultural diversity and the friendly environment. Southeastern had all of that. Because of all of those same reasons, 10 of my family members came to SE, graduated and have decent jobs in the United States and overseas.

I graduated from SE in 1990 and I have enjoyed my time in Durant. I love Southeastern, the teachers, administrative staff, and the city. I have a lot of memories about Southeastern to share. My cultural background discouraged women from getting higher education or pursuing careers but my husband and the kids supported me during my studies and they have given sacrifices. My husband worked an odd schedule in Dallas but tried to see me and the kids on the weekend.

My first experience at SOSU was summer 1964. I had a "luck-of-the-draw" roommate in Hallie McKinney Hall. Because of an earlier commitment, I had received permission to start classes a week late. I "checked in" to my room around midnight on Saturday night, and the roommate I had never met was already asleep. The dorm wasn't air-conditioned, it was hot and humid, and the window in the room was open. When I turned on the light in the bathroom, I was shocked to see that she was partially clad in a wet towel, in "my" bed, with her feet propped up in the windowŠwith absolutely nothing on but a sleepy face. This was 1964, and I remember thinkingŠ"Oh, my gosh. What have I done?" This "free spirit" was Claudette Driever, a summer transfer from OSU, and we went on to become great friends.
