The Department of English, Humanities and Languages offers two degrees in Spanish: the B.A. in Spanish Education and the B.A. in Spanish.
One of the few programs of its kind in the state of Oklahoma, the B.A. in Spanish Education is designed to produce well-qualified teachers who will have benefited from a broad exposure to all forms of linguistic expression in the target language. Beyond that, Spanish Education majors can expect to receive a solid grounding in classic and contemporary Spanish-language literature, a deeper knowledge of historical and cultural issues, as well as a strong preparation in the formal skills of grammar and composition in Spanish. As part of their professional training, Spanish Education students take a sequence of courses in the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences. This professional component not only includes classes in educational theory and psychology, but also features important practical experience in the classroom. Almost from the moment they are admitted to Teacher Education, students enter the real-world classroom, first as observers and finally as student teachers during their final semester of studies.
The B.A. in Spanish is a liberal arts degree with the potential for many practical applications. Employers in the region and beyond are increasingly interested in hiring individuals capable of communicating with their Spanish-speaking clientele and who are familiar with Hispanic culture. A major in Spanish can be teamed with other major areas to produce a knowledge- and skills-set that will be attractive to many employers. A major in Spanish will also serve as a solid background for post-graduate study in such fields as the humanities, law, international business, social sciences, and international studies and relations.
