Academic Advisor - Upward Bound

Job Summary

A 12 month, grant supported position with offices in Broken Bow and Hugo High Schools. Will be working with 9th – 12th grade students in public schools in Broken Bow, Rattan, Antlers, Hugo, fort Towson, Valliant and Idabel to increase the retention and successful completion of secondary school and the enrollment in postsecondary educational programs by the disadvantaged target youth population through motivation; the provision of designated educational, financial aid, career, and other services. Will work on the SOSU campus during the months of June and July each summer. Review of applications will begin July 20, 2010 and continue until the position is filled, projected starting date is September 1, 2010. Applicant must be able to be an active Outreach Representative for Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s TRIO programs.

Director and the Assistant Director of Upward Bound Programs

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor a Plan of Action based on a Needs Assessment for each assigned participant.
  • Provide interpretations of assessment results to participants.
  • Provide academic, career, and personal advisement to project participants as assigned.
  • Supervise project tutor/mentors.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of student performance, progress, and contacts.
  • Perform instructional duties as needed.
  • Organize and participate in field trips, college/technical school visits, and special workshop activities as assigned.
  • Screen and select project participants who meet low-income and first-generation criteria and who have ability and need for academic services.
  • Organize, supervise, and participate in an intense summer component.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director within the scope of program goals.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree or pursuant of Master’s Degree in Public Relations/Communications, Counseling and Guidance, or related field desired.
  • Must be a person who is able to relate to disadvantage youth, parents, school administrators and personnel, service agency personnel, and postsecondary personnel in a positive manner.
  • Must exhibit the understanding, desire, and ability to advocate for the disadvantaged participant.
  • Must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be a “self starter” that displays initiative and ability to assume responsibility and perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Professional ethics related to the position.
