Job Summary
Works with new and current students who have an undeclared major or declared the Bachelors of General Studies as their major. Will work with students and faculty advisors to identify academic options, choose academic strategies and generally achieve academic success. Acts as student resource for academic information and decision-making strategies. Assist students in deciding upon major and career path. Identify and submit proposals for external sources of funding. Assist with activities that enhance the first-year experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Advise new and continuing undergraduates with an undecided major about academics and careers with a focus on assisting students in selection of a major.
- Advise students declaring a BGS major and provide academic advisement and advocacy needed to complete degree.
- Provide workshops, retreats and other outreach activities to focus on career exploration and integration into higher education.
- Search for and submit proposals for external sources of funding.
- Work closely with department faculty to identify effective course sequencing and barriers to student success for BGS students.
- Identify academic needs and problems, identify effective solutions and refer to appropriate resources.
- Work well independently and under-pressure.
- Understands the needs of both traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students.
- Interact with administrative offices including Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Residence Life, the Learning Center and the Dean of Students.
- Willingness to work within the academic framework of the University and serve on faculty and student committees.
- Assist with individual and group recruitment of minority students into academic and leadership scholarship programs.
- Reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Services.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience
Required: Baccalaureate degree Familiarity with admissions and enrollment processes and undergraduate degree programs. Outstanding communication skills, organizational skills, ability to initiate student success programs, and excellent computer skills. High ability to establish rapport with students.
Preferred: Two years experience with higher education. Experience securing, seeking or working with external funding sources. Experience working with or recruiting students.
Must be eligible to work in US. Employment is contingent upon the results of national criminal and sex offender background checks.
