Job Summary

The Clinical Counselor reports to the Director and will work as a member of the SE Counseling Center serving the mental health needs of undergraduate and graduate students with minimal supervision and advanced clinical judgments. The Counseling Center assists students with a range of counseling concerns including brief psychotherapy for adjustment problems, treatment for a range of emotional, psychiatric, substance disorders, and crisis intervention. Opportunities are available for short-term individual counseling, groups, and couples therapy. The clinical Counselor will assist in rotation coverage for after-hours emergencies. In addition to clinical responsibilities, approximately 10% of the Clinical Counselor's time will include education and health promotion. The successful applicant will have superior clinical skills, experience working with college students and be an energetic, highly motivated, and collaborative individual.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and assess students’ individual problems and determine counseling strategy.
  • Provide short term counseling for students and one time faculty/staff consultations.
  • Coordinate and provide treatment addressing such issues as depression, suicide risk, threat to others, anxiety, substance abuse, disordered eating, conflict management, and relationship issues; promote related education and prevention programs.
  • Provide intervention, support, and referrals to students in crisis.
  • Develop, maintain relationships, and make referrals to appropriate on-campus services or off-campus resources as necessary.
  • Provide case management for students with mental health issues and crises.
  • Maintain professional licensures and certifications.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience

Required: Required: Master degree in counseling, psychology, or strongly related field. Training and experience in treating substance abuse, disordered eating, as well as risk and threat assessment is required. Must have three years counseling experience in a college or university counseling center or comparable mental health setting. Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Preferred: Previous participation on Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment Teams.

Required Licensure: Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Master Social Worker, or Licensed Behavioral Practitioner in which substance abuse counseling is considered within the individual’s scope of training and experience to practice. Valid documentation will be required. License must be current and in good standing.

Preferred Licensure: Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Master Social Worker, or Licensed Behavioral Practitioner and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Licenses must be current and in good standing.
