Guidance Specialist - Educational Opportunity Center

Twelve month, federal TRIO grant supported position serving Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) participants in Coal and Pittsburg counties from the McAlester office.

Job Summary

To increase the enrollment, retention, and successful completion of postsecondary educational programs by the disadvantaged adult target population through the provisions of educational access information, financial aid application assistance and personal, academic, and career counseling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Establish a working relationship through personal contact and group meetings with adults, service agencies, and educational institutions of the target area.
  2. Identify and select eligible participants for the project services.
  3. Collect and disseminate postsecondary admission, re-admission, and financial aid information.
  4. Counsel eligible participants concerning career options, educational goals, and planning.
  5. Assist eligible participants with the application process for admission, re-admission, graduation equivalency, and financial aid.
  6. Arrange for support services to help the participant gain admission and improve their chances of completing a postsecondary educational program.
  7. Build and maintain confidential files on all participants to include documentation of all services provided.
  8. Prepare progress reports on each participant and conduct follow-up research of previous participants.
  9. Maintain appropriate office hours on a flexible schedule.

Education, Training and Experience

Required:

  1. Master’s degree or pursuance of Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance.
  2. Must be a person who is able to relate to disadvantaged people, school administrators, and service agency personnel.
  3. Must exhibit the desire and ability to advocate for the disadvantaged participants.
  4. Must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills.
  5. Must demonstrate computer skills appropriate to position.
  6. Professional ethics and confidentiality related to position.
