Meeting to consider changing the constitution (amendment) (click here to see proposed amendment)
Two thirds of the senate being present, the meeting was approved.
Two additional items were considered before the constitutional vote.
The creation of hard print shop budgets has necessitated the budget of the faculty senate being presented to the senate members for their consideration. (Attachment A).
The total budget for the faculty senate being requested is $9,900. Motion was made by Jerry Polson and seconded by Ken Elder to accept the budget as presented. Ken Chinn asked about the faculty senate awards as they are listed on the budget line. Discussion followed. Motion passed.
Should chair-elect position be reopened for nomination? Motion by Glenda Zumwalt and seconded by Margaret Avard to use the existing slate of nominees for chair-elect. Motion Passed.
Motion was made to use two-thirds of members currently employed by the university for amendments to the senate constitution. Motion made by Diane Dixon, Seconded by Glenda Zumwalt. Motion Passed.
The amendment to the constitution concerns those faculty who are eligible for faculty senate. Ken Elder made motion to vote by campus mail for all three options of the proposed amendment on the same ballot. Seconded by Jerry Polson. Glenn Melancon made an additional motion to amend the original motion and strike option B (seconded by Jerry Polson) and just vote on options A & C by written ballot. Melancon Motion passed.
Since option B has been stricken by vote of the senate, now the original motion to include options A & C on a single written ballot to members of the senate was discussed. This motion made by Ken Elder and seconded by Jerry Polson. Now there is an additional motion to remove option C (made by Ken Chinn and seconded by Buddy Pierce) since it does not directly affect option A. Motion passed.
Motion is now before the senate to vote on option A (only) by written ballot of the faculty senate (This is the original motion by Elder/Polson). Ballots to be hand delivered and returned by Monday. 16 votes (or more) are necessary to change the constitution. Motion Passed.
Adjournment at 4:15.
