Brett Elliott called the Senate to order at 3:00 p.m. in lieu of the Faculty Senate Chair, Bryon Clark who was in attendance in another meeting.
Margaret Avard moved to approve the minutes of Faculty Senate meeting of 10-24-01, and Vicki Anderson seconded the motion. The minutes were approved by unanimous acclamation.
Brett Elliott introduced a proposal to change wording in the Academic Policies and Procedures Manual (APPM) in the following four areas. (right click here for changes)
Changes to the description were written by Dr. Polson BAASC Coordinator. Diane Dixon moved to accept. Buddy Pierce seconded. The modifications were accepted by acclamation of the Senate.
Changes to the description in the APPM were proposed. Glenda Zumwalt moved to accept the changes and Buddy Pierce seconded the motion. The modifications were accepted by acclamation of the Senate.
Changes to the description in the APPM were proposed. Jamie Knapp moved to accept the changes and Margaret Avard seconded the motion. The modifications were accepted by acclamation of the Senate.
Changes to the description in the APPM were proposed. Glenda Zumwalt moved to accept the changes and Bruce Johnson seconded the motion. The changes were approved by the Senate with one vote of opposition.
Brett Elliott confirmed the assignment of Senators to call the first meeting of Senate Committees.
The Senate then discussed the listed Charges to Committees (click here for charges). Ken Elder clarified that the charges of the committees is not limited to charges listed.
The topic of limiting time for Academic Appeals was postponed for consideration until the next meeting of the Senate.

Glenn Melancon distributed papers and moderated discussion on Limiting the Drop Add Period Glen moved to change the drop without penalty and add a course date from 10 days to 5 days. Ed Hobbs suggest: 5 days or second class meeting. Bryon Clark asserted that these issues need to go to student personnel policy committees, and that SOSU Vice-President of Student Affairs, Sharon Berish, has recently expressed concerned about student input on such matters. Glenn Melancon moved to send this issue to student personnel policies committee and Ed Hobbs seconded the motion. The motion was acclaimed by the Senate with one dissent.
Bryon Clark explained that the derivation of charges for Senate Committees is from faculty requests, previous committee members, surveys, and department chairs. Committee Chairs will be elected in the first meetings.
Glenn Melancon moved to accept proposed changes to the SOSU Mission Statement, and Glenny Beach seconded the motion. After discussion, Ken Elder moved that the document be accepted with the stipulation that it be edited by an accomplished writer and Stan Alluishi seconded the motion. After discussion, Buddy Pierce called the motion to question. The motion passed by acclamation of the Senate.
The Grievance Policy was tabled until the next meeting of the Faculty Senate.
Glenn Melancon moved to accept the proposed Endowed Chair Policy. After discussion, Brett Elliott moved to modify section (C.) under Southeastern Oklahoma State University Polcies related to the Endowed Chair Policy to read in the last sentence: "The policy will not be used to replace faculty in good standing."
Glenn Melancon moved to accept the motion and Vicki Anderson seconded. The motion passed accordingly: 19 votes For; 2 votes Against; and 1 vote Abstained.
In Other Business, Bryon Clark referred the Senate to the 2002 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in College/University Teaching, 2002, and urged nominations for this award. Further, he urged nominations for the USA Today sponsored student awards.
The next meeting of the SOSU Faculty Senate was scheduled for Wednesday, December 12,2001, and the current meeting was adjourned at 4:51 p.m.
