Calera holds GEAR UP Career Fair

Calera Junior and High School students got a glimpse of life after high school March 16, as they participated in a GEAR UP Career Fair.

The fair was sponsored by the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Partnership. Calera Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Annette Goodwin coordinated the event.

About 20 local professionals from law enforcement, the military, journalism, medicine, law, computer technology, energy, insurance and more took time out of their workdays to help students understand their fields.

Upperclassmen escorted speakers from room to room, allowing all students to hear every speaker, Goodwin said.

“Each speaker shared about their job duties, educational background, jobs related to their field, salaries and then allowed students to ask questions,” Goodwin said.
