WESTLAW
I. WHAT IS WESTLAW
West Publishing Company publishes legal materials such as case law summaries for federal and state cases, and state statutes for all 50 states. When a court hands down a decision, a copy of that decision is sent to West Publishing Company, where editors, who are lawyers, carefully analyze, classify and summarize each case. These cases are then put into one of the legal reporters that West Publishes, such as: Federal Reporter, Supreme Court Reporter, Atlantic Reporter, Northeastern Reporter, Northwestern Reporter, Pacific Reporter, South Eastern Reporter, Southern Reporter, and Southwestern Reporter.
WESTLAW is a computer-assisted legal research system developed by West Publishing company which contains all legal material mentioned in the first paragraph in electronic form, contained in databases. This huge collection of computer databases is located in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is accessed at Southeastern Oklahoma State University Library by a computer that is hooked up to a modem.
WESTLAW USE POLICIES
Since WESTLAW is an online search,
cost of using WESTLAW is based on the amount of time connected to WESTLAW.
Therefore searches must be done as quickly as possible. Search requests
by students will be done by a librarian trained in the use of WESTLAW.
The librarian will sit down with the student and will assist them in filling
put the WESTLAW Search Session Sheet, including helping select the proper
database, and the proper search terms and strategy. After the WESTLAW Search
Session Sheet is filled out, then the librarian will perform the search
for the student.
