Much information is included in the general encyclopedias, such as Compton's, Academic American, or World Book. However, more specialized information is included in subject encyclopedias. When a law is passed by congress, it gives authority to regulatory agencies in the government to make regulations to enforce the law. This is what the Code of Federal Regulations is. It is a codification of rules established by agencies of the Federal Government. The code is divided by topic into what is called titles. These are the titles pertaining to the environment:

Periodicals are a useful source to gather current information on a topic. You look for information on a topic by using a periodical index. These indexes are arranged by subject, and tell you what magazines and journals have articles on that subject.

NEW YORK TIMES INDEX

Index to the New York Times, a major national newspaper. The library has the New York Times from 1851 to the present on microfilm. The index is subject arranged. Paper indexes begin in 1929, and from 1851 to 1928 they are on microfiche.

This index includes the subjects of: astronomy, atmospheric science, biology, botany, chemistry, earth science, environment and conservation, food and nutrition, genetics, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, oceanography, physics, physiology and zoology. This index covers from May 1984 to the present.

Provides access to newspaper articles from the United States on current issues and events, medical topics, biographical articles and news reports about newsworthy people and groups, and fine arts reviews (art exhibits, books, movies, television programs, theater, and musical performances). 

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center)

ERIC is a national education information network for acquiring, selecting, abstracting, storing the literature of education. ERIC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and there are sixteen clearinghouses, that are located at universities or professional organizations. Each of these sixteen clearinghouses is responsible for collecting educational literature on a educational topic. Once the material is gathered, indexed and abstracted, then it appears in one of the two sources below:
 

RESOURCES IN EDUCATION
A monthly index of reports, dissertations, research studies, teacher manuals and classroom guides, lesson plans that are gathered at the sixteen clearinghouses.
CURRENT INDEX TO JOURNALS IN EDUCATION
A guide to current literature in journals on the subject of education, covering articles in about 830 major educational and education related journals. The SE library has the CIJE on microfiche.

There have been many companies that have put these two indexes together.   This ERIC database is the largest educational database in the world. It currently has about 800,000 records on it and it is growing by hundreds each month. The ERIC database covers from 1966 to the present. Available through FirstSearch.

FirstSearch
This is a series of databases that are available from OCLC via the Internet. 
 
WorldCat
This is a database of over 40 million items that have been cataloged by OCLC libraries all over the world.  It is useful as source for further information on a topic after you have exhausted all the resources at SE.
Article First
This is a database of citations to articles that appear in 12,500 journals, which is the largest periodical database the SE library has access to. 
NetFirst
A database of resources available through the Internet.
