Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
R 703 En1o Encyclopedia of World Art
This large set originally had fourteen volumes, published from 1959 to 1967. Later, an index volume was added and two supplement volumes, published in 1983 and 1987. It covers art throughout history and in many different places in the world among many different cultures. It covers the "representational arts" of architecture, sculpture, and painting. This encyclopedia is a translation of the Enciclopedia Universale Dell'Arte, published by the Instituto Per La Collaborazione Culturale in Rome. The contributors to this encyclopedia came from over 35 different countries. The types of articles in this massive set include: historical articles, conceptual and systematic articles, and geographical articles.
R 703 M17d McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Art
This set was published in 1969 and contains 15,000 entries on many topics related to world art. A large part of this work is given to "biographies of painters, sculptors, architects, industrial designers, and decorative artists from all periods and all countries." There are also articles on styles, periods, cities, buildings, museums, and definitions.

This five volume set provides a comprehensive and authoritative reference guide to art history. This encyclopedia was published in 1971 and contains over 4000 articles of the following kind: biographical articles, articles on art in particular nations, articles on periods, styles, schools and movements in art, and finally surveys of civilizations for which no artists' names are known.

This 34 volume set, published in 1996, contains 45,000 articles on all aspects of art, including: the decorative arts, architecture, photography, painting, sculpture, and more. It contains over 20,000 biographies from all periods of history, with there being more biographies for the twentieth century than for earlier periods of art history. About 17,000 of these biographies are of particular kinds of artists, such as: painters, sculptors, architects, illuminators, draughtsmen, silversmiths, cabinetmakers, potters, industrial designers and more. There are also over 3000 biographies on art patrons, collectors, dealers, theorists, writers, art historians, museum officials, and teachers, and critics. It contains articles on art from all the countries of the world, and entries on major cities with significant art traditions.

This encyclopedia "is intended to give the young reader (or his or her teacher or parents) a comprehensive overview of the medium in a single, illustrated, easy-to-use volume." It contains biographies of important photographers, and also "important sections on awards, galleries and museums, magazines, booksellers, manufacturers, films, and book reviews."
