There is so much useful information being produced, disseminated, stored, collected every day about the topic of education. There is information in magazines, journals, books, reports, government publications, radio, television, videos and DVD's. Libraries collect information some of the kinds of resources listed above. There is also a huge amount of Information on the Internet. You, the college student, need to find information from time to time for your classes that you take in college. Where do you go to find information, and how to you know that the information that you find is good, quality information? This is what this document attempts to answer. This document will outline the kinds of information that you can obtain through a place that provides access to information, as well as stores and collects information, your college library. At the end of this document there will be some Internet resources that can be used.

This paper will outline the main tools that use can use to pinpoint the exact resources that you need. Here at the Henry G. KEYWORD SEARCHING IN THE ONLINE CATALOG
Keyword searching is a more flexible
approach to searching the catalog. With keyword searching, you can type
in any word or combination of words or phrases and the keyword program
will search for all the instances of those words or phrases in each record
in the catalog. Keyword is not limited to just one area of each record,
such as the title or subject, but it searches the entire record.
Advantages of keyword searching:
1. can often find books on a topic when you are not using the subject approach
2. If you know the title or part of the title of a book, keyword can find the book
3. You can find books on a narrow or complex subject where you could not by searching by subject

ENCYCLOPEDIAS AND DICTIONARIES
Use encyclopedias as a starting point for research.
Encyclopedias give short descriptive articles on a topic, plus references

The U.S. government publishes many
documents on education related subjects. Most are published by the Education

This report, published by the Office of Accountability, contains data presented by the Oklahoma Educational Indicators program, which was created in 1989 by the Oklahoma School Testing Act. The OEIP is supposed to implement a system of performance measures by which the school districts in Oklahoma could be assessed. A second function of the OEIP is to report information on graduation rates, dropout rates, pupil-teacher ratios, in the context of socioeconomic status and the finances of school districts. | Internet | Oklahoma School Performance Review http://www.schoolreportcard.org/ospr/ "The Oklahoma Legislature created the Oklahoma School Performance Review (OSPR) program in 2001. The program was designed to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the budget and operations of school district and to improve the management and finances of individual school districts. It is the intent of the Legislature that any cost savings that is directly attributable to implementation of performance review recommendations be spent by the school district for classroom expenses. OSPR completed and released the report of its first school performance review in October 2003. The purposes of these reviews are to develop recommendations regarding (1) containing costs, (2) improving management strategies, (3) promoting better education for Oklahoma children and (4) to offer commendations when notable practices are identified. It is designed to assist test users in education, psychology and industry to choose tests that meet their needs from among the many tests available. It contains descriptive listings, references, and critical reviews of commercially published tests in English. The sixteenth edition was published in 2005, and contains tests that are new or that have been significantly revised since the publication of the fifteenth edition in 2003. The fifteenth edition contains tests that were new in 2003 or had been significantly revised since the publication of the fourteenth edition in 2001 and so on back to the first yearbook, which was published in the 1930's. The older editions contain information on tests that have not been revised recently, and information on older versions of tests. CURRICULUM ROOM
The curriculum room houses many items for use by SE students. We are going to talk about the purpose of the curriculum room, the arrangement of the curriculum room, content of the textbooks, and other sources of teaching materials.
PURPOSE OF THE CURRICULUM CENTER
| 1. | The purpose of the curriculum room is to house curriculum materials that can be used by the education students at SE. |
| 2. | The curriculum room houses textbooks that have been selected by the State Textbook Committee for use in the Oklahoma Public Schools. |
| 3. | The State textbook committee consists of 13 members. A. Twelve members are current school teachers (two from each congressional district in Oklahoma) B. One member is a "lay citizen educator" who is not a teacher but has a child in the Oklahoma public schools. |
| 4. | The committee reviews and selects up to ten textbooks for each subject taught in the Oklahoma public schools. |
| 5. | Every year, in the spring, the textbook committee selects new books for a particular subject area. |
| 6. | The next year, they select textbooks for another subject area, and so on, until all disciplines are covered. |
| 7. | Once selected, a textbook is on the list for 6 years. |
| 8. | Each year, the committee publishes the Annual Textbook Requisition, which is a list of selected textbooks in each subject area from which local school districts can choose their textbooks. |
| 9. | We are now a depository for the Third Congressional District and receive all of the textbooks selected for review. |
ARRANGEMENT OF THE CURRICULUM CENTER
| 1. | The books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal System of subject classification, the same as the rest of the books in the library. This puts materials on the same subject together on the shelves. |
| 2. | Materials on each subject are arranged in alphabetical order on the shelf by publisher. |
| 3. | Each publisher's series is arranged in order by grade level. |
| 4. | Shelf arrangement is first by subject, next by publisher, and finally by grade level. |
| 5. | Books are separated into grades K-8 and grades 9-12. |

OTHER SOURCES OF TEACHING MATERIALS
Educators Progress Service Guides to FREE materials
This is a series of guides to supplementary
materials that can be used as a part of a lesson. These guides list materials
available for FREE from companies, government agencies, and associations
and societies.
The types of materials that you
can send for include: maps, pamphlets, charts, exhibits, magazines, books,
films, filmstrips, and videos. Each guide has a subject index and a source
index. Each guide tells you exactly how to send for the materials, and
whether or not there is any geographic restriction to availability.
KITS
A kit is another source of material that can add to a lesson, or be a lesson all by itself. A kit consists of a manual and various other materials such as filmstrips, audiocassettes, posters, objects such as light bulbs, blocks, puppets, or seeds. The items in a kit are all grouped together under a general title.
