ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) is a national education information network for acquiring, selecting, abstracting, storing the literature of education. It is the world's largest single source for educational information, with 1.2 million records of journal articles and other education materials, such as handbooks, guidebooks, unpublished research, dissertations conference proceedings, and much more. ERIC has been under the direction of the U.S. Department of Education. As of September 1, 2004, ERIC was no longer be under the Department of Education. The Department has awarded a contract to Computer Sciences Corporation, to develop the ERIC database, into a Internet accessible database with access to full text of documents, and many journals. There will be access to commercial sources that will enable users to purchase journal articles online. The setup of ERIC under the Department of Education consisted of sixteen clearinghouses, that were located at universities or professional organizations.

Each of these sixteen clearinghouses was responsible for collecting educational literature on a educational topic. Once the material was gathered, indexed and abstracted, then it appeared in one of the two sources below:

Together, the two indexes contain 1.2 million references.  The two indexes together is called the ERIC database. The sixteen clearinghouses ceased operating in December of 2003. Now the content included in ERIC is up to specialists of the Computer Sciences Corporation called content experts or curators, with advice from the ERIC Steering Committee. You can access the ERIC database through the Internet. There are three places that you can access the ERIC database. (1)FirstSearch (2) EBSCOHost (3) The Department of Education Site http://www.eric.ed.gov/
.

SEARCHING ON ERIC

Three levels of searching:

basic Search: use for simple searches
advanced search: use for more complex searches where you need to search different indexes
expert search:  use only if you need a great amount of flexibility in your searching or  you know how to search
                          using boolean type searches

Boolean Searching
Boolean searching is where you can type in words or phrases or combination of words and phrases

        example:
                dyslexia and learning

Types of boolean searching:

1. OR Search
OR expands your search.  By using OR, you can search for several related terms at once:

                                                    for example:

dyslexia or learning disabilities

2. AND SEARCH
AND shrinks your search down.  When using AND, you want all of the terms in your search to be in every record found

(dyslexia or learning disabilities) and teen*

Limiting your search

The ERIC database provides two ways to limit your search. One way to limit your search is to proceed your search term with the two letter abbreviation of the index that you want to search, like su for subject and au for author, as is shown below in column three of the table:

To  limit search

SEARCH EXAMPLE
Using indexes
EXAMPLE (single word) EXAMPLE (phrase)
Subject dyslexia (and choose subject index) su:dyslexia "drug abuse" (and choose
subject or subject phrase indexes)
                  OR
SU=("drug abuse")
Author smith (and choose author index) au:smith "king, christopher" (and choose author index)
title discipline (and choose title index) ti:discipline  ti=("learning disabilities")
(and choose the title index)
this will find documents whose title is learning disabilities and nothing else
              OR
"learning disabilities"
(and choose title index)
This will find titles that have learning disabilities in the title
descriptors cultural (and choose descriptor index) de:cultural  de=("learning disabilities")
(and choose descriptor index)
                   OR
"learning Disabilities" (and choose descriptor index)
abstract censorship (and choose abstract index) ab:censorship N/A
number 274337 (and choose accession number index) no:ed274337 N/A
record type 143 (and choose record type index) rt:143 N/A

You can also type in your term in the box provided and choose the index that you want by clicking on the down arrow to the right of the second  box on the screen. When you do this a list of 34 indexes is shown.  The list of 34 indexes is shown below:

Keyword Abstract Accession Number Author Author Phrase
Corporate Author Phrase Descriptors Descriptors Phrase ERIC Digest Identifiers
Identifiers Phrase Journal Announcement Level of Availability Major Descriptors Major Descriptors Phrase
Minor Descriptors Minor Descriptors Phrase Notes Publication Date Place of Publication
Personal Name Phrase Report Number Record Type Record Type Phrase Standard Number
Source Source Phrase Sponsoring Agency Sponsoring Agency Phrase Subject

Limiting your search by type of document.

There are many different  types of documents in the ERIC database.  To limit your search to a particular type of document, you need to know the document type code

code publication type code Publication type
010 book 120 position paper
021 conference proceedings 131 bibliography
041 doctoral dissertation 132 directory/catalog
042 master's thesis 134 vocabulary/classification
052 classroom teaching guide 141 report, descriptive
070 information analysis 142 evaluation/feasibility report
080 journal article 143 research/technical
110 numerical data 160 test/questionnaire

This  list of Publication/document type or (record type) codes is found in The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors 12ed 1990 on page xvii
