    This book is very helpful for nurses involved in home health. It contains procedures for bandaging, sterilizing procedures, giving injections, terminally ill care, catheters care, pain management, nutrition, oral drug administration, home safety assessment, electrolyte testing, taking vital signs. It contains more than 200 procedures, some basic, some specialized, It is organized alphabetically, with more that 350 illustrations and charts.

    This book, published by Lippincott, contains in part 1 a guide to the triage process, and Part II covers triage guidelines for different ailments and disorders, such as: abdominal pain, burns, chest pain, domestic violence, eye injuries, headache, infectious diseases, rashes and more. part III covers "Pearls of Triage Wisdom". Part IV covers other guidelines beyond triage, such as customer service, and telephone triage.

    This book contains information about frequently encountered medical and surgical conditions found in the pediatric population, such as: anorexia nervosa, asthma, burns, croup, cystic fibrosis, fractures, hemophilia, Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, lead poisoning, other poisoning, Reyes' syndrome, scoliosis, and suicide. Part 2 covers pediatric diagnostic tests and procedures. The appendixes cover nursing assessments, growth and development, immunizations, taking blood pressure, laboratory values, and abbreviations.

    This book covers in an alphabetical format, more than 200 topics, including common disorders, treatments, procedures, and other critical topics affecting older adults.

    This book was written by a team of nurse practitioners. This book was intended to be comprehensive, and also readable and useful. This book contains discussions of common complaints, diseases, and wellness issues across the lifespan, using SOAPE format (subjective, objective, assessment, plan and evaluation). 

Drug Handbooks

R 615.1 Sk3m  Mosby's Nursing Drug Reference 
    This reference guide on prescription drugs was first published in 1988. It has listings and information on more than 1300 generic and 4500 trade drugs. For each drug given, it lists the pronunciation of the drug name, functional and chemical classifications, action (pharmacologic properties), uses of each drug, dosages, available forms (capsule, tablets, injections, creams, etc), side effects, instances when the drug should not be given, interactions, and nursing considerations.

    This reference guide says on the cover "the information standard for prescription drugs and nursing considerations. The A-Z listing of drugs comprises the bulk of this manual. For each drug listed, it gives the action/kinetics, uses of the drug, contraindications, special concerns, side effects, how the drug is supplied, and dosages. A special section at the end of each drug is the nursing considerations section, which contains information on administration and storage of the drug, assessment of the drug, interventions, client/family teaching on the drug, and outcomes.

    This book, published by Physician's Desk Reference, contains information on prescription drugs. For each drug, it contains the category the drug is in, the drug classification (such as: neuromuscular blocking agent, antibiotic, narcotic). It also gives the uses of each drug, special concerns, side effects, drug interactions, dosage for adults, and a section called nursing considerations such as administration and storage, assessment and interventions, and client/family teaching.

This database contains citations to articles that appear in journals in science, technology, social science, business and humanities, and popular culture. With almost 12,500 journals indexed, this is the largest journal database in the SE Library's collection. It covers from 1990 to the
present, and is updated daily.
ERIC
This has the entire ERIC database from 1966 to the present, and it is updated monthly. ERIC has journal articles from many education journals, and it also has ERIC documents, which consist of classroom guides, unpublished research, dissertations, lesson plans, and other items. ERIC covers all aspects of education, including:  adult, career and vocational education, elementary and early childhood education, secondary education,  higher education, assessment and evaluation, disabilities and gifted education, educational management,  information and technology, language and  linguistics, reading and communication, teacher and teacher education, and urban education. It has over 1 million records in the database.
Medline
This is a database that contains about 10 million records on the subject of medicine.  It covers 3,500 periodicals on all aspects of medicine, including: clinical medicine,  dentistry,  experimental medicine, health services administration, nursing, nutrition, pathology, psychiatry, toxiology, and veterinary medicine. It covers 1965 to the present.
PapersFirst
Contains citations to papers presented at worldwide meetings, conferences, expositions, workshops, congresses, and symposia. To be included the information must have been received by the British Document Supply Center. It covers from October 1993 and is updated monthly. It has over 2.3  million records and is updated 24 times a year.
Proceedings
Contains over 74,000 citations of every congress, symposium, conference, and workshop from all over the world that was received at the British Library from October 1993 to the present. This database is updated twice a week.
WilsonSelectPlus
Covers 800 periodicals from 1994 to the present. Academic Search Elite provides full text for nearly 1,490 academic, social sciences, humanities, general science, education and multi-cultural journals. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for over 2,670 journals. Over 1,700 journals are peer reviewed. Full text backfiles go as far back as January of 1990, while indexing and abstract backfiles go as far back as January of 1984. This database is updated daily on EBSCOhost.
Business Source Elite
Business Source Elite provides full text from over 1,020 journals covering business, management, economics, banking, finance, accounting and much more. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 1,560 journals. PsycINFO contains more than 1.8 million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations and technical reports, all in the field of psychology. The Vertical File cabinets on the first floor (by the Juvenile section) contain folders on numerous environmental topics such as: Cancer, Bacteriology, Immunization, heart-diseases, gastrointestinal system-diseases, hypertension, diseases, herpes, health, myocardial infarction, medical care, medicaid.
 
 



U.S. GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS

Government documents are materials such as reports, handbooks, manuals, studies, congressional hearings about many different Subjects. The collection is arranged by the department of government. Most items in the government documents area can be accessed by subject by using the computer catalog for books. The Government Documents collection is housed on floor 2A.

The Department of Health and Human Services has most of the items that are on the subject of medicine and diseases. Some selected items are:

    Contains birth statistics by race, sex, age and other subject areas. Also contains death statistics by age, race, sex, and cause of death.
HE 20.6213  Health, United States 
    This annual publication presents national trends in health in the United States. Contains statistics on many subjects, such as life expectancy, National Health care expenditures, national Insurance Coverage, Injury related visits to Hospital ER's, plus death rates for many diseases.

Published by the Centers for Disease Control, this publication contains research on many health topics, and also provides much useful information and statistics. 
 

HE 22.18  Health Care Financing Review 
    This publication helps readers to understand the U.S. health care system and the Medicare and Medicaid Programs. It does this by providing information and analysis on a broad range of health care financing and delivery issues. This quarterly journal is published by the Health Care Financing Administration, which is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

    This Bimonthly publication comes from the National Center for Research Resources. It publishes articles on new biomedical technologies being developed in the United States.
HE 20.3031  Medicine for the Public (Layman) Series 
    These are a series of pamphlets published by the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health. There are pamphlets on such things as: Brian Aging and Dementia, Cancer, Depression and Manic-Depressive Illness, Blood Transfusions, high blood pressure, arthritis, alzheimer's disease, allergic diseases, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and epilepsy.
HE 20.3559  Environmental Health Perspectives 
    This is the monthly journal of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and is published by the Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It contains articles related to environmental health, such as: school children with asthma, pesticide use and birth defects, drinking water contaminants, air pollution toxicity, and health problems of DDT use in Mexico.
