Gale Series

The Gale Group offers a series of publications which provide literary criticism for works from the classical times to the present.  Each series has a similar format.  The entries are organized alphabetically by literary author.  Each entry includes a brief biographical sketch of the author, excerpts from criticism, and an annotated bibliography of further resources.  To find the full text of the excerpted criticism, use the citation at the end of the excerpt.  Each volume includes a cumulative index to all preceding volumes.

This is the revised American edition of a work originally published in Britain. This work was published from 1896 to 1902 and contains short character sketches of characters from major works of literature up to the time it was published.

BIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES

OFten to understand an author's works, it is useful to know about the author's life experiences. Many times an author's experiences are put into their literature. The following sources are reference sources which provide biographical information about literary authors and limited interpretation of their works.

living and dead.

Contemporary Authors
This is a set that is a "bio-biliographical guide to current writers in fiction, general non-fiction, poetry, journalism, drama, motion pictures, television and other fields." The emphasis is on writers of the post 1960 period (those who have died since 1960), but "literary greats of the early twentieth century whose works are popular in today's high schools and college curriculums" are also included. The series already spans over 200 volumes and a companion series, called Contemporary Authors New Revision Series, contains updates on authors mentioned in older volumes of the Contemporary Authors Series. So far 115,000 authors have been included.

Something About the Author
This is a set that is a "examines the lives and works of authors of and illustrators of books for children." The emphasis is on current writers, but authors and illustrators are included who "span the full time range of children's literature." Emphasis is on English-speaking countries, but works are included from around the world if an english translation is available. There is some overlap with the Contemporary Authors series listed above.

Works of literature can be categorized by time (19th century, 20th century), by genre (science fiction, supernatural), by geography (American, British, Latin American, Southern), by literary period or movement ( romantic, naturalistic, modern), by type (novel, short story poetry, drama) and by type of theme( social protest, utopian). These books are further works that you can use to critically evaluate literature in many different ways.
