A Bibliography of Sources at SE Library



This bibliography lists some of the significant resources that the Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library has on the subject of music. There are thousands of books, reference books, DVD's and Music CD's, on music. In addition, there are reel to reel tapes, and LP records on music in the Archives of the library. There are also many records, and CD's in the music library, located in the fine arts building.

How Our Books are Arranged

We use the Dewey Decimal System to Arrange our books in the library. The Dewey system arranges every subject under a number system, where each number in a 1,000 number classification scheme corresponds to a specific subject. Here are the ten main classes of the Dewey Decimal System:

The 780's are located on the third floor of the library. Many of the recordings of music are located in the Music Library in Room 106 of the Fine Arts building. You can look up the recordings in the Library Catalog, and the call number for these items begins with SR (for sound recording). Other recordings of music are found in the Archives room in the Library on Floor 2A. There are also some books on music education in the 370's.

The reference collection is located on the first floor of the library. In the reference collection you will find encyclopedias, dictionaries, histories of music. Since this new work is only one volume, it does not contain as much non-western music. Also, there is an emphasis on placing music among the other subjects such as politics, religion, sociology, psychology, semiotics, computers, technology. More emphasis on the role of women in music is given. Also music composers are put in their historical context, and major new surveys of historical periods are included.

GROVE MUSIC DICTIONARIES

The Grove music dictionaries are the finest in the world. The first edition was published in 1878 in four volumes, and was edited by Sir George Grove. The second through fifth editions were published from 1904 to 1954. In the 1970's work on a sixth edition was started and it was decided to title the work The New Grove This 1st edition of the New Grove was published in 1980, and the 2nd in 2001,(making the 2001 edition the 7th edition) and edited by Stanley Sadie. Since 1980, other Grove dictionaries have been published on American music, jazz, and the opera, which are listed below. "The Grove Dictionaries have never been, and should never be, cumulative. Each edition is designed to meet the needs of its own generation. Some material relevant to scholars in the past may not be so today, and so will not be included in the current edition.

This is a continuation of the Dictionary of Music and Musicians that was begun by Sir George Grove in the 1870's. The fifth edition was published in 1954 (shelved in the regular circulating collection). The 1980 edition, was considered by the editors to be so changed from the 1954 edition as to be a completely new dictionary. The 2001 edition, called the 2nd edition of the New Grove, retains the the title of the 1980 edition and is called the New Grove. This set contains articles of composers and other music-related personages, terminology, cities and towns with significant musical traditions, musical concepts and heritage, etc.; also contains bibliographies at the end of each article. The focus is on European music, but there are many entries on non-western music, and there are entries on the music of every country in the world. Other Grove dictionaries are:

This book, now in its third edition, says that "The ultimate intention of this work is once and for all to place popular music shoulder to shoulder with classical and operatic music." It has expanded from the 1992 edition from four volumes to six. It still contains articles on popular music from 1900 to 1998. Has articles on jazz, rock, rap, soul, blues, big band, country music. It also has articles on musical plays on Broadway and other places, music recording companies, music associations, plus biographies on musical groups and individuals. The 1992 edition focused primarily on British and American popular music, but this edition attempts to include popular music from some other countries, like reggae, and African pop.

In the back it contains the Academy of Country Music Award winners, American Music Award winners, British Country Music Association Awards, Canadian Country Music Association Awards, Country Music Association of Australia awards, National Cowboy Hall of Fame Hall of great Western performers, the Dove Awards given by the Gospel Music Association, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Grammy Awards, International Bluegrass Music Awards, Nashville Songwriters Association International awards, Music City News Awards, RPM Big Country Awards, and awards listed by artist. Also given are the gold and platinum awards given each week by the Recording Industry Association of America since 1958, gold and platinum awards given each month by the Canadian Recording Industry Association since 1975. Still useful though not current (published 1983).

This is the most up to date book on country music in the SE Library. It contains biographies of artists in country and western music. It contains descriptions of different styles of Country music, such as bluegrass, country-pop, honky tonk and country boogie. folk rock, folk blues, country rock, and a list of essential albums and essential artists and also a series of essays on country music.

This is a one volume work new has been around for a long time, since 1947, when the first edition was published. The fourth edition came out in 2003 and defines opera as "a drama in music" and gives as a reason to study opera as: "the opera is the vi sable and audible projection of the power, wealth, and taste of the society that supports it. Thus, study of its history is of value for the light it sheds on the history of culture in general." It starts with the ancient Greeks, and goes to the end of the twentieth century. The last chapters contain discussions of opera in different geographical areas. There is an extensive bibliography at the end.

This work has the history of the opera from the seventeenth century to the present day (1994). It contains a list of further readings and a chronology at the end.

  This book contains information on the "musical heritage of the following Christian traditions: Roman Catholic, Anglican and Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, and Baptist." It contains definitions of terms used in church music, and biographical information on composers who wrote church music, plus brief definitions of historical events that shaped the churches and church music. An Appendix at the end gives the names of principal church music publishers and church music organizations.

This book defines what gospel music is and charts the or gins of this music form. It contains biographical articles on both performers and composers, and other people influential in the development of gospel music. It also includes important events in the history of gospel, important radio stations that played gospel music, and important recording companies in the history of gospel music.

The last sections contain a list of percussion manufacturers and supplies, and a list of percussion works.

The period covered goes from the earliest beginnings to around 2003, with more emphasis on nineteenth and twentieth century music (half of the volumes of the set are on 19th and 20th century music). The last volume contains a chronology, bibliography and master index.

This book contains "biographies, big hits, and annual events" of Oklahoma music. There is an introductory essay on Oklahoma Music, plus an alphabetical guide of significant Oklahoma musicians, groups, tribes, and sounds. There is an analysis of number one hits written by Oklahoma artists or groups. Then there is an analysis of Oklahoma place-based songs, lyrics and Album titles.

The twelve volumes in this set contain biographical information about a single composer or a group of composers. The information contained in these volumes came from the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 1980, so that is why each title begins with "The New Grove". To obtain a list of all twelve of these volumes, select series to search by and then type in Composer Biography Series.

This new centennial edition marks 100 years since Theodore Baker (who also published a Dictionary of Musical Terms in 1895, which is the first publication mentioned in this bibliography) published the first slim edition in 1900. This new ninth expands to six volumes and presents biographies of composers, major and minor, conductors, musicians and musicologists, from both the past and present. This new edition represents a major shift in the content of Bakers. The earlier editions focused mainly on classical music, and this new edition includes many more biographies on musicians of popular rock and jazz music.

MUSIC ARTICLE GUIDE

The nation's only guide to selected articles in American Music periodicals, with special emphasis on the needs of school and college music educators. Arranged by subject, it does contain articles on important composers in music history. However, this index is difficult to use. The library has this index from 1976 to 1995.
 

HUMANITIES INDEX

An index to articles appearing in several hundred journals in the humanities, including music history. Coverage is from 1974 to 1993 and they are located on the index tables. Many of the titles from Humanities Index are available online through FirstSearch in a database called WilsonSelectPlus.

EBSCOHost

EBSCOHost is a series of fifteen databases that contain indexing of periodical literature. The one most useful for Music History is Academic Search Elite. Academic Search Elite is a database of articles appearing in 3,466 academic magazines and journals, many of which are full text.

FirstSearch

FirstSearch is a series of thirteen databases that contain indexing of periodical literature. The one most useful for Music History is Article First. Article First is a database of articles appearing in over 20,000 academic magazines and journals.
