GROVE MUSIC DICTIONARIES
The Grove music dictionaries are the finest in the world. The
first edition was published in 1878 in four volumes, and was edited by Sir George
Grove. The second through fifth editions were published from 1904 to 1954. In
the 1970's work on a sixth edition was started and it was decided to title the
work The New Grove. The 1st edition of the New Grove was published
in 1980, and the 2nd in 2001,(making the 2001 edition the 7th edition) and edited
by Stanley Sadie. Since 1980, other Grove dictionaries have been published on
American music, jazz, and the opera, which are listed below. "The Grove Dictionaries
have never been, and should never be, cumulative. Each edition is designed to
meet the needs of its own generation. Some material relevant to scholars in
the past may not be so today, and so will not be included in the current edition.

| This is a continuation of the Dictionary of Music and Musicians that was begun by Sir George Grove in the 1870's. The fifth edition was published in 1954 (shelved in the regular circulating collection). The 1980 edition, was considered by the editors to be so changed from the 1954 edition as to be a completely new dictionary. The 2001 edition, called the 2nd edition of the New Grove, retains the the title of the 1980 edition and is called the New Grove. This set contains articles of composers and other music-related personages, terminology, cities and towns with significant musical traditions, musical concepts and heritage, etc.; also contains bibliographies at the end of each article. MUSIC ARTICLE GUIDE
The nation's only guide to selected articles in American
Music periodicals, with special emphasis on the needs of school and college
music educators. Arranged by subject, it does contain articles on important
composers in music history. However, this index is difficult to use. The library has
this index from 1976 to 1995.
HUMANITIES INDEX
An index to articles appearing in several hundred journals in the humanities, including music history. Coverage is from 1974 to 1993 and they are located on the index tables. Many of the titles from Humanities Index are available online through FirstSearch in a database called WilsonSelectPlus.
EBSCOHost
EBSCOHost is a series of fifteen databases that contain indexing of periodical literature. The one most useful for Music History is Academic Search Premier. Academic Search Premier is a database of articles appearing in 8,144 academic magazines and journals, many of which are full text.
