- Native Indians of the Pacific Northwest Collection
"This site provides an extensive digital collection of original photographs and documents about the Northwest
Coast and Plateau Indian cultures, complemented by essays written by anthropologists, historians, and teachers
about both particular tribes and cross-cultural topics. These cultures have occupied, and in some cases still live
in parts of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Maps are available that show
traditional territories or reservation boundaries."
- Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties: compiled by Charles J. Kappler
Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties, compiled and edited by Charles J. Kappler, is an historically
significant, seven volume compilation of U.S. treaties, laws and executive orders pertaining to Native
American Indian tribes. The volumes cover U.S. Government treaties with Native Americans from
1778-1883 (Volume II) and U.S. laws and executive orders concerning Native Americans from
1871-1970 (Volumes I, III-VII). The work was first published in 1903-04 by the U.S. Government Printing
Office. Enhanced by the editors' use of margin notations and a comprehensive index, the information contained in Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties is in high demand by Native peoples, researchers, journalists, attorneys, legislators, teachers and others of both Native and non-Native origins.
- SODA: Southern Oregon Digital Archives
The Southern Oregon Digital Archives (SODA) was funded originally by a grant from the Institute
of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). From July of 2001 through December of 2004, IMLS funding enabled
Hannon Library to create a digital library of over 1,500 documents in two collections, the Bioregion
Collection and First Nations Collection. The digitized books, documents, and articles were drawn from
Hannon Library’s rich collections of federal, state, and county publications, other library materials,
and from outreach to regional agencies. Public access to the SODA database began in October 2002
- National Archives and Records Administration: Indians/Native Americans
There is an abundance of information available at the National Archives. It
contains the Index to the Applications Submitted for the Eastern Cherokee
Roll of 1909 (Guion Miller Roll), the Index to the Final Rolls of Citizens
and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory (Dawes), "Semper
Fidelis, Code Talkers" The winter 2001 issue of Nara's Prologue publication
features an article on the Navajo "code talkers" used by the Marine Corps in
WWII. The original twenty-nine Navajo code talkers received the Congressional
Gold Medal for their wartime contributions in maintaining an unbreakable code.
The "code talkers" work is told in the movie Windtalkers. There are also links
to National Park Service Native American resources, Digital collections at other
websites, genealogical resources, historical resources at other sites, laws
and treaties and tribal resources. This National Park Service site is dedicated
to helping tribes preserve their cultural heritage. Includes information on
grants and funding, publications, Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, training
programs, and tribal websites.
- Indian Peoples of the Northern Great Plains--Online Image Database
"Images of the Indian Peoples of the Northern Great Plains is a searchable online photograph database
created with grant support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant
Program."
- George Catlin and His Indian Gallery
"George Catlin (1796-1872) journeyed west five times in the 1830s to paint the Plains Indians and
their way of life. Convinced that westward expansion spelled certain disaster for native peoples, he viewed
his Indian Gallery as a way "to rescue from oblivion their primitive looks and customs."
