Press Release Date: 01-05-2007
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new arena–convocation center at Southeastern Oklahoma State University is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday (January 11) north of Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
A number of special guests will be joining SOSU President and Chancellor-designate Dr. Glen D. Johnson at the ceremony and the general public is invited to attend.
Dr. Jeff Hale, SOSU Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing and Intercollegiate Athletics and who also chairs the Durant Community Facilities Authority, said bid packages totaling $6.8 million on the project were awarded December 19.
The 52,000 square-foot multi-purpose facility will feature 3,200 permanent seats with a total seating capacity of 4,100. It will be utilized for athletics events, graduations, convocations, concerts, etc.
The project is funded through the May 2004 sales tax vote which was approved by Durant citizens. Another part of the proposal approved by voters is the Durant Multi-Sports Complex, which was dedicated and officially opened November 17, 2006.
CMS Willowbrook of Chickasha, Oklahoma, is the construction management firm for the arena–convocation center, while AIP from Norman, Oklahoma, is the architectural firm.
The Durant Community Facilities Authority is working with the city of Durant, architects, and the construction management team to complete the project. Several local and area sub-contractors will be providing services and equipment.
The new facility will be constructed just north of Bloomer Sullivan Gym. June 2008 is the target date for completion of the project.
