Blaine Ray Workshop Set for Sept. 11-12 at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. -- Southeastern Oklahoma State University will present the Blaine Ray TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling) Workshop September 11-12.

TPR Storytelling is a method for teaching foreign language that was invented in 1990 by Ray, a Spanish teacher in Bakersfield, California.

Ray's students were not interested in the unexciting process of learning a foreign language from a textbook, so he began using James Asher's Total Physical Response method to teach Spanish.

Southeastern hosted the popular workshop a year ago and is pleased to bring it back for a second-straight presentation. Content for the workshop includes the theory behind TPRS; how to do classical TPRS effectively; how to teach gesture, mini-situations and mini-stories; how to motivate students to want to learn foreign languages; the importance of student rapport; and grading and testing.

The program also deals with advanced students; the importance of reading novels in TPRS with advanced students; plus techniques to teach grammar, and more.

Ray's workshop is designed to "teach this powerful foreign language teaching method. TPRS is changing the way many teachers go about teaching a foreign language today."

Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 11 and the workshop will be held from 1-5 p.m. Friday's schedule begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $159 through August 31. After September 1, the cost is $199. The workshop will be held in the old Student Union Magnolia Room.

Enrollment is limited to 100 and registration will be available until the workshop is filled.

Participants may register in person at the Continuing Education Department, Room 225, in the University Center, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Telephone registration requires payment by credit card. Phone 580-745-2871 or 1-800-435-1327, extension 2871.
