DURANT, Okla. -- Eleven students from the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Department of Occupational Safety recently attended the American Society of Safety Engineers National Student Leadership Conference in Louisville, Ky.

This was the largest student leadership conference in the United States for students majoring in occupational safety, emergency program management, aviation safety, and environmental safety.

Participants attended seminars on environmental science, safety culture, resume preparation, leadership skills, civic engagement, industrial hygiene, mining, construction, and many others related to the specialized field of occupational safety and health.

Dr. Wayne Jones, chair of SE's Occupational Safety Department, was the trip sponsor.

Jones said, "This was the best group of students I've ever taken to a conference or seminar. One of our students, Bernardo Estrada Jr., was on the winning Quiz Bowl team which beat out all of the other teams from across the nation. I would stack our Southeastern occupational safety students against any in the USA."

The Quiz Bowl featured 24 teams from around the country with several head-to-head battles before reaching the final two. Team members answered general questions on occupational safety, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, ergonomics, and fire science.

Southeastern students attending the conference were Derek Black, Ryan Brnardic, Bernardo Estrada Jr., Cody Harrison, Stephanie Hudson, Nathan Johnson, Stacie Johnston, Jonathan Ludrick, Matthew Moody, Ray Stephens, and J.D. Wallace.

The students were able to network with industry professionals from around the country and interact with more than 200 other occupational safety college students from more than 20 colleges and universities.
