Group Discusses Development of Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program
May 16, 2008
A group of citizens met recently at Southeastern Oklahoma State University to discuss the possible development of a therapeutic horseback riding program. The meeting was chaired by Lisa Turner, first lady of Southeastern.
Representatives from the Choctaw Nation, Durant and Caddo Public Schools and local business leaders were in attendance. Linda Barron, of Talala, retired director of "Bit by Bit," a therapeutic horseback riding program at Rogers State University, has agreed to offer her assistance in the organization of this program.
Therapeutic horseback riding programs promote physical and mental health for children and adults with disabilities.
"We have witnessed amazing progress during the four years our daughter participated in a similar program in Claremore," Turner said. "Children with disabilities and their families face numerous daily challenges. A riding facility provides a positive environment where they can be successful and enjoy an extracurricular activity."
