Southeastern professor named Counselor of the Year

DURANT, Okla.– Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Dr. Daniel Weigel, Associate Professor of Psychology and Counseling, has received the prestigious Counselor of the Year award from the Oklahoma Counseling Association (OCA).

Only one counselor per year throughout the state of Oklahoma receives this award at the annual OCA Midwinter Conference.

Weigel earned his B.S. at the University of South Dakota in 1993, graduating Cum Laude with a double major in Psychology/Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies. He received his M.A. in Community Counseling from South Dakota in 1995 and his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Counseling from Idaho State University in 2002.

He joined the Southeastern faculty in 2002. He is currently a licensed professional counselor and licensed alcohol and drug counselor in the state of Oklahoma.

"We are so fortunate to have highly qualified faculty like Dr. Weigel in the Department of Behavioral Sciences. He is recognized as a leader on the faculty, in the community and in his profession," said Dr. Ed Mauzey, Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.

Professional interests include Rural Mental Health and Addiction Counseling, Prescription Medication Abuse and Dependence, Professional Identity in Clinical Supervision and Counselor Licensure Portability.

Along with the OCA's Counselor of the Year award, Weigel also received the OCA's Southeast Counselor of the Year award in 2008. He has been recognized in the past by the United States Senate for his work as a volunteer American Red Cross disaster mental health counselor in New York City following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

He holds professional memberships in the OCA, the Oklahoma Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (OACES), Oklahoma Mental Health Counselors Association (OKMHCA) and the Oklahoma Association of Addiction and Offender Counselors (OAAOC).

He has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and book chapters and also participated in several National and International Workshops and Presentations. Weigel has also served as president of the Oklahoma Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and is currently the vice-chair of the Oklahoma Department of Health Licensed Professional Counselor Advisory Board.
