Southeastern to host Dixon Honorary Scholarship Workshop

Press Release Date: 10-12-2009

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University will host the 7th-annual Dr. Wayne A. Dixon Honorary Scholarship Workshop from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

The event will be held in the ball oom of the old Student Union Building under the sponsorship of the Behavioral Sciences and Continuing Education Departments. For information or to register, contact the Continuing Education Department at 580-745-2858 or e-mail kdonovan@SE.edu.

Registration fee for the workshop is $85. Southeastern faculty, staff and students will be admitted for $30.

The first workshop was presented in 2003 with the support of both departments and several faculty members who volunteered their time.

The workshop, created by Dr. Jon Reid, was developed with several goals in mind. The first goal was to help local counselors, including many Southeastern graduates, who were having difficulty finding convenient continuing-education credits, which are required to maintain licenses as professional counselors.

The workshop helps local counselors and graduate students who usually do not get the benefit of hearing presentations of the counseling and psychology faculty made at state or national conferences.

There was a lack of, and desire for, scholarships specifically for psychology and counseling students.

The local workshop has greatly helped faculty at Southeastern meet the expectations for making contributions to the scholarly development of academic fields.

The workshop has provided a regular and economical means of saying "thank you" to the many mental-health professionals in the community who supervise our undergraduate psychology students and graduate counseling students.

From the first workshop, an annual feature was the sharing of undergraduate-student research which had been supervised by the Dr. Wayne Dixon, who passed away in 2007. This past year, the workshop organizing committee unanimously agreed to rename the workshop after Dr. Dixon in recognition of his contributions to the development of our students and professionals in the community.

Under the direction of Dr. Daniel Weigel, the BSS workshop is entering its seventh year.
