Chancellor Johnson to speak at E.T. Dunlap event on March 27
DURANT, Okla. -- Dr. Glen D. Johnson, Chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, will be awarded the 2009 E.T. Dunlap Medal for outstanding public service on March 27 at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. On the same day, Johnson will deliver remarks at the E.T. Dunlap Medal and Lectureship Program on public policy in higher education.
The lectureship will begin at 11 a.m. in the Southeastern Ballroom.
Before assuming the role of chancellor in January 2007, Johnson served as the 16th president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University for 10 years. As the chief executive officer for the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. Johnson leads a state system comprised of 25 state colleges and universities, 10 constituent agencies, one higher education center and independent colleges and universities coordinated with the state system. He reports to a constitutional board whose nine members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate.
Johnson provides leadership on matters relating to standards for Oklahoma higher education, courses and programs of study, budget allocations for institutions, fees and tuition, and strategic planning. He is responsible for an annual higher education budget in excess of $1.4 billion as well as the state endowment fund, with a market value over $200 million. He is responsible for OneNet, the state's telecommunications network for government and education, as well as the Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program, which has guaranteed more than 1 million student loans exceeding $2.5 billion in insured debt. Johnson directs 20 statewide scholarship programs as well as other programs, including the State Regents' Summer Academies in Math and Science program and the statewide GEAR UP efforts.
The Dunlap Lectureship was established in 1989 in honor of Dr. E.T. Dunlap, the longtime chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. Dunlap was a 1940 graduate of Southeastern and was honored by the University as a Distinguished Alumnus.
The lecture was created by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education who designated Southeastern as the host institution for this continuing lectureship.
Dunlap served as chancellor of the Oklahoma State System for Higher Education from July 1, 1961, to Jan. 1, 1982. At his retirement, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education named him Chancellor Emeritus.
Dunlap died in 1997.
