DURANT, Okla. – Youth Services of Bryan County recently donated a check in the amount of $1,000 to create a scholarship at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in memory of two employees who recently passed away. The scholarship is in honor of David Haney and Rebecca Pierce, both of whom were graduates of Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Community Counseling Program.

"Our Board of Directors wanted to do something to honor the hard work and memory of these two individuals," said Gerald Nickles, executive director of Youth Services of Bryan County. "A scholarship in their names was a logical and appropriate way to pay tribute to them and insure that their work is continued."

The scholarship will be awarded to Community Counseling Graduate Students at Southeastern.

"Scholarships, such as this, are the life-blood of education for many Southeastern students," said Dr. William Mawer, Associate Dean of the School of Education & Behavioral Sciences. "Without the thoughtful generosity of organizations like the Youth Services of Bryan County, many students' dreams of a college education would remain unfulfilled. The benefits of a college education are bestowed upon the present and future students at Southeastern and will be a lasting tribute to David Haney and Rebecca Pierce."

Added Dr. Reba Criswell, assistant professor of counseling in behavioral sciences: "The faculty members of the department of behavioral sciences extend their deep appreciation to the Youth Services of Bryan County for this generous contribution to the education of our graduate students. The ongoing collaboration with the Youth Services has greatly enhanced the preparation of our counseling students. Through this scholarship, may the lives of two former graduates be remembered."

Youth Services of Bryan County is designed to provide emergency shelter to youth. The mission of the Youth Services is to provide, promote, assist, and facilitate a community-based, structured process of counseling, socialization, recreation, and educational assistance to youth and their families who have been identified as in need of assistance in adjusting to current life situations.
