SE to host "Victims in the Shadows" art exhibit

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University will host "The Cost of Shame: Victims in the Shadows," Feb. 15-26, in the Centre Gallery of the Visual and Performing Arts Center.
"The Cost of Shame: Victims in the Shadows" is a juried art exhibition addressing violence against women. The project is supported by a grant from the Office of Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice and is a part of the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) Violence Prevention Program.
The art exhibit is sponsored by the SE Art Department, Office of Violence Prevention and Office of Student Life, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oklahoma Arts Council. Viewing hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, or by arrangement.
Special events include the Exhibit Opening/Reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, and the discussion forum "Counting the Cost: The Impact of Violence on Individuals, Community and Culture," scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22. Participants in the discussion forum will represent academia, social workers, advocates, counselors and clergy.
The Cost of Shame art exhibition is intended to cast light on the plight of the countless women who have been victims of violence: sexual, domestic , social or emotional. Artists are asked to submit work that will focus upon the victims of violence and the impact it has had on them and/or the cost that victimization has had on our whole culture and society. Subject, nuance, style and approach are open to the interpretation of each artist.
The exhibition will be curated by a selection committee. Acceptance into the show will be based on the appropriateness to the theme and overall aesthetic interest. Submission is open to all artists.
Work must be original and reflect the theme of the show. All works must be hand-delivered to the Centre Gallery on Feb. 13 and picked up on March 27.
