Rep. John Carey receives Distinguished Service award from OSRHE

DURANT, Okla. – State Rep. John Carey of Durant has received the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) and Council of Presidents.
The award was presented Thursday night by Chancellor Glen D. Johnson at the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) board of regents dinner. The event was held in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
"It's an honor for me to be recognized by a group of people who have made such a significant impact in the area of higher education," Rep. Carey said.
Representing District 21, Carey earned a bachelor's degree in banking/finance at Southeastern in 1992. His committee assignments include Appropriation and Budget, Economic Development, and Veterans and Military Affairs (Vice Chair).
"Rep. John Carey is very deserving of the State Regents and the Council of Presidents 2009 Distinguished Service Award. He has been a strong and consistent advocate for the needs of our students throughout his tenure in the House of Representatives," said Chancellor Johnson. "He is always willing to step forward on difficult issues and is an aggressive advocate for campus safety, college access and appropriate funding levels for higher education. Our State System of Higher Education is very grateful for his actions."
Carey has been active in civic affairs, serving as a Gear-Up mentor, a Crisis Control board member, a board member of the Oklahoma State University Consumer & Family Services Advisory Committee, past chairman of the Bryan County Junior Livestock Show, and as a member of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Homecoming Committee.
He was also the centennial commencement speaker at Southeastern in December 2009.
Carey and his wife Pam, have three children, Guy Walter (G.W.), Anna Scott, and Emma Claire.
