Southeastern places in aviation competition

DURANT, Okla. -- Southeastern Oklahoma State University placed seventh overall at the October SAFECON Region VI competition in Salina, Kansas.

The University of Nebraska-Omaha won the event with Oklahoma State University fifth and the Unjversity of Oklahoma eighth.

Kansas State hosted the National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition on KSU’s Salina campus. Region VI includes teams from Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas.

Ten Southeastern aviation students garnered 25 places in the various events, led by Andrew Hart, Blayze Perkins, Travis Smith and Connor Tyler with four places each. Jordan Powell, Alec Maloy and Alex Bourquardez placed in two each with Austin McCann, Zac Morgan and Mike O’Dea each placing in one category.

Ten members of Southeastern’s team are from Texas, with one each from Oklahoma and California. The Texans are O’Dea and Perkins from Grapevine, Powell from Wylie, Maloy from Friendswood, Hart from Argyle, Bourquardez from Dallas, Smith from Greenville and Tyler from Sherman. Other team members from Texas were Chase Henley from Highland Village and Nathan Alcantara from Colleyville.

Morgan is from Prague, Okla., and McCann from Foothill Ranch, Calif.

Southeastern finished seventh overall with 232 points, sixth in ground events with 110 points and seventh in flying events with 122 points.

  • Power-off Landing: Smith, tie 7; McCann, 12; Hart, 14.
  • Navigation: Perkins, 18.
  • Message Drop: Morgan, Drop Master, O’Dea, pilot, 14; Maloy, Drop Master, Smith, Pilot, 19.
  • Manual Flight Computer Accuracy: Perkins, 9: Bourquardez, 17; Maloy, 18.
  • Ground Trainer: Perkins, 6; Smith, 15; Hart, 17.
  • Aircraft Preflight Inspection: Tyler, 7; Hart, 18.
  • Aircraft Recognition: Smith, 6; Tyler, 8; Bourquardez, 14.
  • Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation (SCAN): Powell, 11; Tyler 17.
