Southeastern to host Red River Sing-off Oct. 12
Press Release Date: 10-04-2010
DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Chorale, Southeastern’s premier vocal ensemble, will host the 2nd Annual Red River Sing-Off on Tuesday, October 12.
The choral competition will place high school choirs from Oklahoma and Texas in head-to-head competition. Eight exceptional choirs, all with a history of superior performance, have been invited to participate in the event. The choirs will be placed in 4 divisions, with one Oklahoma and one Texas choir in each.
Each division will have winner and a runner-up. There will be one Grand Champion award for the choir rated the highest regardless of division. And finally, the point totals of all choirs will be added to determine whether Oklahoma or Texas is the overall contest winner.
The Champion format approach for this event is unique for choral contests. Most contests use a rating system of Superior, Excellent, Good, etc. The Red River Sing-off will use a simple point system instead. Choirs will be awarded points for sound quality, technical accuracy, musicality, and stage deportment.
Choirs invited include: Granbury High School, Texas; Bixby High School, Oklahoma; Lucas Lovejoy High School, Texas; Durant High School, Oklahoma; Celina High School, Texas; Vian High School, Oklahoma; Pottsboro High School, Texas; and Durant High School “E Class” Choir, Oklahoma.
Dr. David Childs, internationally known composer and conductor, has agreed to return to Southeastern to once again clinic each of the choirs attending. Childs is the composer of “The Fire and The Rose,”,a choral work commissioned by the Southeastern Chorale and the University to mark the Southeastern Centennial. He first arrived on campus to conduct the World Premiere of work. He was also the composer and conductor of "Requiem," performed in Carnegie Hall with the Southeastern Chorale participating in 2009.
Judges for this event include Dr. Suzanne Pence – University of Texas, Dr. Charles Chapman – formerly at Southewestern Oklahoma State University, and Donna McComb, Pearl, Mississippi.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. in Montgomery Auditorium and conclude with the awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
