Southeastern Symphonic Winds presents "(re)Inventions" on November 30.
Press Release Date: 11-30-2010
DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Symphonic Winds – Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s premier instrumental ensemble – continues its 2010-2011 concert season with a program entitled "(re)Inventions" on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in Montgomery Auditorium.
Dr. Jacob Wallace, Southeastern’s Director of Bands, said: "Continuing this season’s focus on American music, this program deals with two different generations of American composers of band music. The first half of the program presents three classic masterworks of the band repertoire – Clifton Williams’ Caccia and Chorale, Fisher Tull’s Sketches on a Tudor Psalm, and Vincent Persichetti’s Divertimento for Band. All of those pieces were written between the 1950s and 1970s, and they represent the foundation of American band music."
"The second half of the program presents pieces that have similarities to those on the first half, but as written by composers active in the 1990s and 2000s. That’s where the title ‘(re)Inventions’ comes from – we see the same musical ‘inventions’ from different perspectives across the entire concert. The pieces on the second half of the concert are Steven Bryant’s Dusk, Ron Nelson’s Courtly Airs and Dances, and David Maslanka’s Give Us This Day. It’s intriguing to see how those works reflect similar aesthetic ideals, but in different applications."
The Southeastern Symphonic Winds is a performing ensemble consisting of Southeastern students and is open to qualified students in all disciplines pending competitive audition. "(re)Inventions" begins at 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery Auditorium. Admission is free of charge and open to the public.
