SE School of Arts & Sciences offers week of "creative activities"

Press Release Date: 4-13-2011

DURANT, Okla. – Musical performances, theatre presentations, faculty lectures and more will be part of the School of Arts and Sciences' Brain Storm Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Week at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Activities are scheduled April 18-21 (Monday-Thursday).

Among the highlights of the week are lectures by faculty members Dr. Tom Patton and Dr. Gleny Beach.

Patton will present "Science and Adventure in the Grand Canyon and Other Western Rivers" on Monday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the New Theatre Building on campus.

An avid river runner for 35 years, Patton's classes and research focus on aquatic ecosystems and lower vertebrates (fish, amphibians, and reptiles). In the summer of 2010, he had the opportunity to oar a small boat 280 miles through the Grand Canyon with a group of fellow scientists and "river rats." In this presentation, Patton will provide an overview of that trip, as well as conservation issues in the Grand Canyon and other western rivers as they relate to his work.

On Tuesday, April 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the New Theatre Building, Beach will present a lecture titled, "Out of South Africa: Art Education & Safari."

Winner of the 2010 Governor's Arts Award, Beach will provide an overview of her recent trip to Johannesburg and Cape Town in collaboration with people and institutions involved in promoting art education in South Africa. Her presentation will also include a view of her safari to Kruger National Park.
