DURANT, Okla. – Six Southeastern Oklahoma State University students have been awarded Wyatt F. and Mattie M. Jeltz scholarships.

This number sets a new standard for number of recipients to any institution of higher education in Oklahoma. Southeastern had five students earn scholarships last year.

The 2011 award winners are Dennie Michelle Hornbeak, sophomore Graphic Design major from Ardmore; Chelsea Nwankwo, junior Biology major from Leonard, Texas; Matthew Jones, senior Advertising and Public Relations major from Elk City; Jessica Smith, sophomore Biology major from Houston, Texas; Essie Jefferson, senior Music major from Garland, Texas; and Krystal Cummings, junior Sociology major from Mesquite, Texas.

The Jeltz scholarship is a $900 award and recipients are eligible at least three times. Criteria are academic excellence, good personal character and financial need established by SE’s Financial Aid Office. Recipients must be at least a sophomore attending an Oklahoma state-supported accredited college or university.

The Jeltz Scholarship Foundation was established by an endowment and is incorporated by the State of Oklahoma. Wyatt and Mattie Jeltz, now deceased, were Oklahomans who devoted their lives to education, employment opportunities and community service.

They were vitally interested in assisting young people, particularly African-Americans displaying strong academic ability to acquire an education and a better life. Awards may go to non-traditional students, but the emphasis is on traditional students.

Scholarships are awarded annually in February and October. Application deadlines are Dec. 20 and Aug. 15. Interested students should contact the Dean of Students at 580-745-2266 or e-mail cphelps@SE. edu.
