Press Release Date: 1-11-2011
DURANT, Okla. -- Southeastern Oklahoma State University will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17.
The event is sponsored by the Office of Student Life and the Multicultural Student Office under the direction of Dean of Students Camille Phelps.
SE’s Day of Service will begin at 9 a.m. with a welcome and overview of the day in the Glen D. Johnson student union auditorium. Participants will break into groups at 9:45.
Students will depart at 10 a.m. for Durant elementary schools, Victory Life Food Bank, St. Catherine’s Food Bank, Families Feeding Families and The Hope Chest.
Southeastern students will read to elementary students in the Durant Independent School District and share information about Martin Luther King Jr.
Other SE students will help with food preparation at the various food banks before returning to the student union loft for lunch at noon.
An hour of reflection is planned for 1-2 p.m. in the union auditorium.
According to Liz Howard, Student Activities Coordinator, this is a day on, not a day off.
"While others are taking the day off," Howard said, "we take advantage of the opportunity to have our Southeastern students involved in the community. This is a great hands-on event for our students and we always have lots of volunteers.
"This is a chance for our students to be involved in a special day and to work with others in our community and we try to take full advantage of it."
