University co-sponsors music enrichment program for children

Press Release Date: 08-30-2011

DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Hub for Arts Resources in Education (SHARE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing all children in the Texoma region with excellent arts experiences to enrich their lives and the life of the community.

SHARE is sponsoring a Children’s Chorus for girls and boys in grades 4-8 with unchanged voices. The Children’s Chorus will offer the opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular vocal music program designed to introduce the singers to the best children’s classical music while developing their singing, musicianship and personal skills.

The SHARE Children’s Chorus will have an audition and parents meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, in the Fine Arts Building on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. All interested children are invited to participate. The Music Department at Southeastern is a co-sponsor of SHARE and the Children’s Chorus.

After the audition, the singers will be placed in either the Training or Touring Choir.

Southeastern’s Dr. Jeri Walker, Donna Massey Professor in Music Education, is the Artistic Director of the SHARE Children’s Chorus. For further information, please contact her at 580-745-2385 or jwalker@se.edu

The Choir is not limited to those who have musical experience or are deemed ‘talented.’ There is a place for all students interested in participating and all students are encouraged to sing and learn in the SHARE Children’s Chorus.

Walker said, "The intent is to develop a top-quality choir that will represent the Texoma region around the states of Oklahoma and Texas and beyond. In addition to this, the singers will be developing personal attributes such as concentration, responsibility, attention to detail, desire for excellence and social skills."
