DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Musical Arts Series will feature seven events during the 2011-12 academic year.

The series opens September 29 with “A Far Cry,’’ an orchestra founded in 2007 by 17 young musicians with a fresh approach to classical music.

Dr. Jeri Walker is the new director of Southeastern’s Musical Arts Series.

Walker is the Donna Massey Chair for Music Education at Southeastern, where she directs the Music Education Program. She teaches methods, fundamentals and orientation courses, and supervises student teachers. She is also the Artistic Director of the Southeastern Hub for Arts Resources in Education (SHARE) Children’s Choir.

Walker has taught both instrumental and vocal music from pre-school through the collegiate level. She has also served as presenter, adjudicator, guest conductor and workshop leader for state, regional, national and international musical events, instrumental, vocal and general.

"This season, the Musical Arts Series again offers a wide variety of excellent musical performances," Walker said. "The MAS, begun by Dr. James Wintle many years ago, will continue to offer exceptional performances by top musicians in their fields at no cost to the audience".

"I am excited to be a part of this wonderful tradition at Southeastern."

The second MAS presentation will feature the Quarteto Vivace Brasil on October 13, followed by the Nuovo Quarteto Pianistico Italiana October 27.

The Meadows World Music Ensemble will perform December 1, the Texas Boys Choir will be here February 2, with the Spanish Brass scheduled for February 21.

The final performance will feature the Rose Ensemble on April 23.

The Musical Arts Series is produced with sponsorship from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, the Donna Massey Music Education Support Fund, Oklahoma Arts Council, Red River Arts Alliance, Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Steger Piano Institute.
