Professor receives national recognition from organization

DURANT, Okla. –Acknowledging his contributions to occupational safety higher education, teaching, service, research and scholarship, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) has named Dr. Wayne D. Jones of Southeastern Oklahoma State University a 2011 recipient of the President’s Award.
Jones received the award at the organization’s annual Professional Development Conference in Chicago.
According to the society of engineers, recipients of this award are recognized for their work with the Society, the health and environmental field, and the safety profession. It is the highest presidential award presented to member by the Society.
Jones was also the 2009 recipient of the Dr. William E. Tarrants Outstanding Safety Educator Award, the highest award presented to an educator by the Society.
Jones has been a full-time member of the Southeastern faculty since 1997, and has served as chair of the department of occupational safety & health since 2001. Serving as president of the Southeastern faculty senate, he also occupied the office of administrator of the ASSE academic practice specialty for three years.
Jones is a six-time recipient of the Southeastern faculty senate award for service and teaching, and was the 2005 recipient of the Jesse Locke Membership Safety Award presented by the ASSE Southwest (Dallas) chapter.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Safety Education/Business Administration from Southeastern in 1983, the Master of Science degree in Aviation Safety from the University of Central Missouri in 1984, the Master of Arts degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1988, and the Doctor of Education degree from Texas A & M University-Commerce in 2002.
The Southeastern Department of Occupational Safety & Health is one of the largest programs of its kind in the United States.
