Musical Arts series begins September 18

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Musical Arts Series will present eight events during the 2012-13 academic year.

This year’s sponsors include Southeastern, the Red River Arts Council, the Oklahoma Arts Council, Donna Massey Music Education Fund, and local donors and supporters.

Dr. Jeri Walker, Donna Massey Professor in Music Education at Southeastern, is the director of the Musical Arts Series. Walker directs the Music Education Program, teaching methods, fundamentals and orientation courses, and also supervises student teachers.

She is also the Artistic Director of the Southeastern Hub for Arts Resources in Education (SHARE) Children’s Choir.

Walker said, “This year’s season will be a musical adventure that includes a wide variety of styles and genre, all performed at masterful artistic levels.

“We are so fortunate to have our sponsors and donors who make this quality of musicianship available in our community. I am very excited about the concerts this year and look forward to a great season.”

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. All performances are free of charge and the public is invited.

The series begins Tuesday, September 18, with Mariachi Espuelas de Plata in concert on the lawn in front of Morrison Hall.

The U.S. Navy Country Current Country/Bluegrass Ensemble will perform Friday, September 21, in Montgomery Auditorium.

Tuesday, Oct. 16, will feature Corrado Greco Solo Piano in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. This is presented by the Steger Piano Institute and the Wanda Bass Foundation.

Talujon, a percussion ensemble, will perform in the Fine Arts Recital Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

The Zodiac Trio, clarinet, violin and piano, will appear on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Recital Hall.

Hugues LeClere, solo piano, is another Steger and Bass event in the Recital Hall on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Armonia Celeste, Early Music, will perform on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in the Recital Hall.

The Musical Arts Series will conclude with a performance by Cantus, a Male Vocal Ensemble, in the Recital Hall on Tuesday, February 26.

Performers from the Musical Arts Series will be presenting concerts in the Durant Public Schools and workshops at Southeastern on the days of their performances.
