Native American Symposium scheduled for November 5-6

DURANT, Okla. – The 11th Native American Symposium: Native Leadership: Past, Present, and Future will be held in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union at Southeastern Oklahoma State University on November 5-6. The symposium is in conjunction with the Native November celebration throughout the entire month.

The two-day event begins at 1 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 5) with stickball on the front lawn of Morrison Hall (weather permitting).  That will be followed by the Native American Film Presentation at 2 p.m. in the Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library.

Dr. Clara Sue Kidwell, a strong proponent and major fixture in the

development of American Indian Studies programs, will present a 3 p.m. lecture on Native Studies in the library.

The Native American Leadership Student Presentations will begin at 4:30 p.m., also in the library.

The Keynote Banquet will begin at 6 p.m. in the Southeastern ballroom with Richard Green as the featured speaker. Green is the tribal historian of the Chickasaw Nation and author of “B.F. Overton: The Chickasaw Nation’s Last War Chief.”

Friday’s schedule opens at 9 a.m. with Native Education and Welfare in the student union auditorium with speakers Joseph Bohanon of Bacone College and Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Margaret Neubauer of Southern Methodist University. Other presentations throughout the day include such subjects as Native Identities, History, Literature, Leadership, Studies, Film and Performing Arts, Public Awareness, Social Services, Arts, Philosophy, and Languages.

The day features Lunch in the Loft at noon and will close with Fiction and Poetry Reading in the student union auditorium at 4 p.m. with Jeffrey DeLotto of Texas Wesleyan University and Ron G. Wallace of Southeastern.

An exhibit of Native American art from the Southeastern collections will be held in the Visual and Performing Arts Centre Gallery through November 20. The exhibit is the Hogan and Keithley Native American Collection.
