Southeastern celebrates arrival of holiday season

DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Oklahoma State University campus and community officially welcomed the arrival of the holiday season Monday with a tradition-filled evening of events.

The activities featured Santa and Entertainment, tree lighting and the Candlelighting and Concert.

Santa and Entertainment opened the festivities, with Dell McLain reading traditional stories on the front lawn of the Magnolia House.

Afterwards, the annual tree-lighting ceremony was held on the front lawn of campus.

In keeping with tradition, Southeastern held the 93rd annual Candlelighting and Concert in Montgomery Auditorium. This event was first held on Dec. 18, 1921.

This year’s concert featured the Southeastern Symphonic Choir performing Handel’s Messiah with orchestra, Dr. Joshua Nannestad, conductor.

The concert once again included the audience singing of traditional Christmas carols, focusing on the festive nature of the season.

The Southeastern Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Ben Shaffer, joined join in for the traditional carol sing. Cardinal Key and Blue Key Honor Societies served as acolytes in the candlelighting portion of the evening.

The performance began with a short concert of Christmas music presented by the SHARE Children’s Chorus, directed by Dr. Jeri Walker.
