Southeastern kicks off football season with new tailgating tradition

Press Release Date: 09-01-2011

DURANT, Okla. – Storm fans, start your grills!

September 10 will be the start of a new tradition as Southeastern opens the 2011 football season as a member of the Great American Conference, the newest conference in NCAA Division II.

Mark Webb, president of the Southeastern Alumni Association, is spearheading a new tailgating tradition for the Blue and Gold.

Webb, (’90) said, “Southeastern has a great history, a great tradition in athletics. I’m anxious to make this ‘5 Saturdays Campaign’ a great new tradition.

“Football and tailgating go hand in hand and this is going to be a great tailgate for all Savage Storm fans. I hope everyone will plan on coming out to support the team and we want them to show up early.

“We’ve worked hard to make this first tailgate adventure a roaring success. We want to have the absolute finest tailgating venue in the Great American Conference.

“We’re inviting all Storm fans to come out and join us. Have a great time tailgating with us, listening to some good music from Front Porch Mercy, and getting ready to move across the street and help the Storm defeat Central Oklahoma in the first football game of the season.”

Kickoff for the UCO game is set for 6 p.m.

Storm fans will recognize Webb as the public address voice of Storm athletics. He has been handling those duties for football and basketball for several years.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, and live music will be featured for the first home game. The food and fun will begin three hours before game time and resume after the game for another two hours.

University Boulevard will be barricaded between North 2nd and North 3rd Avenues on all Southeastern game days.

Tailgating will be allowed on the grassy area at the southwest corner of North 2nd and University and on the new parking lot at the corner of North 1st and University.

Space is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Retail activity is discouraged.

Tailgating participants are expected to clean up their areas and dispose of trash in the provided receptacles.

The purpose of the tailgating area is to provide a friendly and safe environment for alumni, students, friends, and families to socialize and enjoy Game Day at Southeastern.

Grills will be permitted, but burn-ban status will be considered.

Plans include some interaction with Southeastern players and coaches. Southeastern’s marching band, cheerleaders and Sparks dance team will participate in the festivities.
