Student newspaper earns state awards

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s student newspaper brought home 24 overall awards, including six first-place honors, from the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association 2012 Competition at the OCMA annual conference. The event was held March 30 at Oklahoma State University.

The awards banquet was part of the conference, which included educational sessions with a number of excellent speakers. The keynote speaker was Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist William Snyder.

The Southeastern, under the direction of faculty advisor Jeni Maple, claimed first place in Front Page Design and Interior Page Design, and second place in Overall Newspaper.

Ten students earned a total of 21 individual honors, including four first-place awards.

The Southeastern competed against Bacone College, East Central, Northwestern, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma Panhandle, Southern Nazarene, USAO ,and the University of Tulsa.

Maple said, “I am so proud of the student publications staff and the work they’ve done to earn these awards. They did well at this competition not only in terms of the number of awards won but also in that they performed well in so many categories.”

Managing editor Lornna Bates led the way with six individual awards. She took second place in General News Reporting, Editorial Writing and Column Writing; third for Reporting Portfolio; and honorable mention awards for Editorial Writing and Feature Writing.

Brandi Brunch, former managing editor and now contributing writer, won first place in Advertising Display, third in Reviews and Editorial Writing, and honorable mention in Column Writing.

Former yeardisc editor Alisha Loyd was first in Feature Photography, third for Photography Portfolio, and took an honorable mention in News Photography.

Samantha Perera, former news editor, earned second place awards in News Photography and Reporting Portfolio.

Staff writer Jerreck McWilliams took first place in Column Writing and Nick Growall, former staff writer, now a contributing writer, won the top spot in Reviews.

Staff writers Dani Norton (second place in Reviews), Chrissy Dill (third place in General News Reporting), and Kendra Germany (honorable mention in Reviews), plus advertising director Steven Dixon (honorable mention in Advertising Display), each collected individual honors.
