Auditions set for Children’s Chorus

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern OklahomaState University’s SHARE Children’s Chorus is opening auditions for spring 2016.

Now in its sixth year, the program offers children in grades 3-8 the opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular vocal music program designed to introduce the finest children’s classical music, while developing singing and musicianship skills.

Auditions will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning January 12 in the University Center on campus.

The Chorus enjoyed a very active fall schedule, including singing on DurantMain Street before the Christmas parade, opening the lighting of the Christmas tree event in Denison’s Heritage Park, and participating in Candlelighting at Southeastern.

The Chorus is planning a tour of Oklahoma in the spring.

The Chorus is directed by Dr. Jeri Walker, Donna Massey Professor in Music Education at Southeastern.  She is assisted by exemplary Southeastern Music Education students. New Chorus members will be accepted into the choir beginning January 12.

Auditions set for Children’s Chorus

DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Hub for Arts Resources in Education (SHARE) is again opening auditions for the SHARE Children’s Chorus for all interested singers in grades 3-8.

The SHARE Children’s Chorus, now in its sixth year, has enjoyed singing, reading music and performing. Artistic Director Dr. Jeri Walker is an experienced music educator who creates interesting, educational and fun rehearsal sessions.

The Chorus meets from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays during the school year and performs at least once a semester.

Past performances have included Southeastern Candlelighting; Texoma Choral Festival in Sherman, Texas; Music for Family and Friends; Calera Historical  Society Christmas Program; Children’s Chorus from Carmen with the Sherman Symphony; Red River Children’s Choir Festival; and a joint concert with the Children’s Chorus of Greater North Texas.

Auditions begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, and students do not need to prepare anything or bring any music. Auditions will be held in the University Center on the Durant campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Walker said, “The intent is to develop a top-quality choir that will represent the Texoma region around the states of Oklahoma and Texas and beyond. Students will learn to sing, read music, perform in an ensemble and appreciate quality children’s choral literature.

Canadian percussion group to perform Feb. 25

DURANT, Okla. –  Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Musical Arts Series continues with the appearance of TorQ, a Canadian percussion quartet, in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

The group has performed to critical acclaim across Canada and also appeared in many collaborative events.

TorQ will present a master class for all interested musicians at 3:30 p.m. on the same day, also in the Recital Hall.

The four members, Richard Burrows, Adam Campbell, Jamie Drake and Daniel Morphy, are committed to making new music accessible to audiences that span generations and geography.

TorQ commissions new works for percussion quartet from both established and up-and-coming composers.

TorQ is invested in music education and presents more than 70 school performances a year.

The concert and master class are free and everyone is invited to attend.

Music Education students conducting research

DURANT, Okla. – Music Education students, led by Dr. Jeri Walker, Donna Massey Professor in Music Education at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, will be conducting research throughout the month of January.

These students are gathering information to improve music teaching and learning and are seeking help from anyone age 18 or older who is interested in this project.

The purpose of the study is to learn what “traditional” American songs people know and can sing.

Participants will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire and then be asked to complete a short activity.

Participation is strictly voluntary and any data gathered will be confidential. There are no risks, benefits or compensation for participation, but it will be fun and will not only contribute to the Music Education profession, but help Southeastern students learn to create scholarly research.

The results of this study will be presented at conferences in Brownsville, Texas, and in Brazil. Participants will not be identified in any way.

Arts & Sciences to present BrainStorm research week in April

DURANT, Okla. – The School of Arts and Sciences at Southeastern Oklahoma State University is pleased to announce the second annual BrainStorm research week.

This event, which will begin on Monday, April 16, and conclude on Saturday, April 21, is designed to highlight outstanding achievement in student and faculty research throughout the School of Arts and Sciences.

As part of the week-long event, the School of Arts and Sciences will offer a myriad of presentations, ranging from performances of Theatre at Southeastern and the Department of Music to special lectures and research poster presentations. Special guest artists in residence during portions of the week include internationally-renowned choral conductor Craig Hella Johnson and prolific, award-winning composers Carter Pann and Joel Puckett.

Opportunities to become involved with BrainStorm are available to all students and faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences at Southeastern, and all events as part of the week are free and open to the public.

DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Hub for Arts Resources in Education (SHARE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing all children in the Texoma region with excellent arts experiences to enrich their lives and the life of the community.

SHARE is sponsoring a Children’s Chorus for girls and boys in grades 4-8 with unchanged voices. The Children’s Chorus will offer the opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular vocal music program designed to introduce the singers to the best children’s classical music while developing their singing, musicianship and personal skills.

The SHARE Children’s Chorus will have an audition and parents meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, in the Fine Arts Building on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. All interested children are invited to participate. The Music Department at Southeastern is a co-sponsor of SHARE and the Children’s Chorus.

After the audition, the singers will be placed in either the Training or Touring Choir.
