Southeastern celebrates arrival of holiday season

DURANT, Okla. – The Southeastern Oklahoma State University campus and community officially welcomed the arrival of the holiday season Monday with a tradition-filled evening of events.

The activities featured Santa and Entertainment, tree lighting and the Candlelighting and Concert.

Santa and Entertainment opened the festivities, with Dell McLain reading traditional stories on the front lawn of the Magnolia House.

Afterwards, the annual tree-lighting ceremony was held on the front lawn of campus.

In keeping with tradition, Southeastern held the 93rd annual Candlelighting and Concert in Montgomery Auditorium. This event was first held on Dec. 18, 1921.

This year’s concert featured the Southeastern Symphonic Choir performing Handel’s Messiah with orchestra, Dr. Joshua Nannestad, conductor.

The concert once again included the audience singing of traditional Christmas carols, focusing on the festive nature of the season.

The Southeastern Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Ben Shaffer, joined join in for the traditional carol sing. Cardinal Key and Blue Key Honor Societies served as acolytes in the candlelighting portion of the evening.

The performance began with a short concert of Christmas music presented by the SHARE Children’s Chorus, directed by Dr. Jeri Walker.

Traditional events highlight holiday celebration

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University and the community celebrated the holiday season Monday with a number of traditional events. This included receptions at the Magnolia House, a visit from Santa Claus, Christmas story readings, the lighting of the tree on the front lawn, and the Candlelighting event in Montgomery Auditorium.

Community invited to holiday activities on December 3

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University again invites the community to join in celebrating the holidays on Monday, December 3.

Three events will be highlighted by the annual Candlelighting ceremony at 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery Auditorium.

The community is also invited to an open house from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Magnolia House (former home of the president). Following that, from

5-6:40 p.m., Santa and entertainment will be provided. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony is then scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on the front lawn.

All events are free and the community is encouraged to attend.

Community invited to Campus Tree Lighting Ceremony

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University will begin the holiday festivities on Thursday, Dec. 1, with the Campus and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The community is invited to join in the celebration.

The fun starts at 5 p.m. with the Chorvettes caroling at the Magnolia House (on the corner of N. 6th Avenue and University Boulevard). Santa Claus will make an appearance and everyone is encouraged to bring their children.

A special treat will be the reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Southeastern’s Dell McLain, chair of the Art, Communication and Theatre Department. Cookies and cocoa will be served.

Southeastern’s Brass Ensemble will perform on the front lawn at 5:45 p.m. in conjunction with the lighting of the 31-foot-tall Blue and Gold Southeastern Christmas Tree.
