Admissions-Recruitment Office moves to Welcome Center

DURANT, Okla. – The Office of Admissions and Recruitment has a new home on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University  – the Welcome Center.

The Admissions-Recruitment staff recently made the move from the first floor of the Administration Building  (A-101) to the Welcome Center, which is located at the southeast corner of 5th and University.

According to University officials, the new location will better serve visitors, prospective students and their families by offering improved parking and access to campus for tours and events.

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment serves as the central hub for admissions, campus tours, recruiting efforts, and international services. Prospective students are encouraged to come by the office if they have any questions regarding application for admission to the university, to turn in a transcript or ACT/ SAT scores, or to speak with an admission counselor.

 

An open house of the facility is being planned for early next year.

The Welcome Center also houses the offices of Special Events, Alumni Relations, Marketing and Development, which are now located in the west end of the building.

Southeastern’s Gold and Blue event scheduled for Feb. 21

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Gold and Blue Scholarship Gala and Auction will be held Saturday, February 21.

The event is sponsored by the Southeastern Alumni Association and will be held in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.  Start time is 6:30 p.m. and all auction proceeds will benefit student scholarships.

Last year’s Gala raised $20,000 to enable the Alumni Association to grant scholarships for Fall 2014.

“The donated auction items for 2015 are exceptional,” said Mary Frank, chair of the Gala Committee, “and if you enjoy dancing, food, fun and friends, then this is your evening.’’

Tickets are priced at $75 per person for a full evening of live and silent auctions, dinner and dancing. Live music will be provided by the Guymon & McCann Band.

Cocktail attire optional is the dress of the evening .

“Everyone is invited to come out for an evening that will feature lots of fun and also raise money for student scholarships to Southeastern,” said Kerrey Matlock, president of the Southeastern Alumni Association.

Founders’ Day activities scheduled for March 6

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University will celebrate Founders’ Day on Thursday, March 6.

Founders’ Day is an annual event that highlights the foundation of Southeastern’s identity – historical, political, cultural and academic.

The Founders’ Day program will begin at 3 p.m. in Montgomery Auditorium with a performance by the Southeastern Chorale.

Vicki Hudson, chair of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department, will offer the welcome.

Dr. David Norris, Distinguished Former Faculty and author of “A History of Southeastern Oklahoma State University Since 1909” will speak on the history of the University.

President Larry Minks will address the Vision and Future of Southeastern to conclude the program.

Since Southeastern opened in 1909 in a former peach orchard, the Peach Cook-Off has now become a favorite event of the celebration.

Peach Cook-Off entries (the food) are due in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union loft at 11 a.m. with judging to be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Refrigerated items are not permitted. The Cook-Off is open to the general public, as well as faculty, staff, and students of Southeastern.

There are three main categories: Pies/Cobblers, Jams/Jellies, and Cooks’ Choice, which may include salsa, cakes, pasties, etc. Peaches must be the main ingredient in each entry.

Entry forms may be printed at www.se.edu/conted or picked up at the Office of Continuing Education in the Welcome Center. Entries must be submitted to Career Management/Office of Continuing Education located in the Welcome Center no later than noon on March 4.

Peach Cook-Off results will be announced during the program. Everyone is invited to sample the cook-off entries in the Student Union Loft immediately following the program.

Southeastern to celebrate Founders’ Day on March 5

DURANT, Okla. – On March 5, 1909, the Oklahoma Senate passed a bill establishing a normal school in Durant.

On March 5, 2013, (next Tuesday), that normal school – now known as Southeastern Oklahoma State University — and the community will observe this historic date with a Founders’ Day celebration.

The festivities will begin at 3 p.m. in Southeastern’s historic Montgomery Auditorium, located in Morrison Hall.  The program will include historian and Southeastern professor emeritus Dr. David Norris, who will share a brief history of the events surrounding the founding of the institution. Southeastern president Larry Minks will offer comments on the vision and future of the University, and the Southeastern Chorale will perform at the event.  In addition, a commendation will be presented from the Office of the Governor.  Vicki Hudson, Assistant Professor/Chair of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, will serve as MC.

As part of the celebration and in a salute to the building of Southeastern on grounds where peach trees once grew, a peach cooking contest will be held. Following the formal program, the festivities will move to the loft of the Glen D. Johnson Student Union where contest entries will be judged in two categories: peach pies/cobblers and peach jams/jellies. The contest is open to the public and a prize will be presented to the winner in each category. Entry forms must be submitted to the Career Management Office of Continuing Education in the Welcome Center by noon on March 4.  Entries must be delivered to the Student Union Loft by 1:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Alumni Gold and Blue Gala scheduled for February 9

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Gold and Blue Scholarship Gala and Auction will be held February 9.

The event, Denim and Diamonds, is sponsored by the Southeastern Alumni Association and will be held in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

Show time is 7 p.m. and all proceeds will benefit student scholarships. Last year’s Gala raised $24,000 for the scholarship fund.

“The donated auction items for 2013 are exceptional,” said Mary Frank, chair of the Gala Committee, “and if you enjoy dancing, food, fun and friends, then this is your evening. The Gala is a party with a purpose.”

Tickets are priced at $50 per person for a full evening of casino games, live and silent auctions, dancing and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Live music will be provided by the Big Daddy Band of Dallas.

Denim casual is the dress of the evening.
