Outstanding Southeastern Faculty & Staff

Dr. Courtney Kernek

Dr. Courtney Kernek is the epitome of someone who is passionate about her work. With 14 years of experience in the field of marketing, she has dedicated herself to learning, teaching, and creating for the betterment of her field.

As an assistant professor of marketing in the John Massey School of Business (JMSB) at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Kernek teaches all things marketing, conducts research, advises students, serves on university and JMSB committees, and spreads the word that marketing is awesome. Additionally, she also provides marketing and management consulting services to remain current in the industry. Although she is incredibly happy to be working in higher education, the path to her love for teaching had many exciting pit stops.

After receiving her undergraduate degree in marketing, Kernek began working in television as a news media director and internet reporter. Eventually, she became the promotions manager and still did internet reporting and live talent for the station. While getting her MBA, she worked as a graduate assistant and, at that point, considered getting her doctorate. She had been in television a little over three years when the opportunity to teach and get her Ph.D. presented itself. Eager, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Kernek continued consulting for the station until 2009. During that time, she was responsible for the promotions launch of a new network, the CW, and won a national marketing award for the Best Launch in America.

When given the opportunity to work at the JMSB, the marketing guru was excited to be a part of the faculty. “I had followed SE since they became AACSB accredited around 2008,” Kernek said, “AACSB accreditation is earned by less than five percent of the world’s business programs, and I knew that the JMSB offered quality business programs and excellent faculty.” Upon being asked about her favorite part of working at Southeastern, she immediately said the people. “The faculty and staff I work with are collegial and truly care about the education and services they are providing students,” she said.

Along with some fellow Southeastern professionals, Kernek recently completed a marketing textbook. She was included in authoring and editing the Essentials of Marketing Research text, 4th Edition. “It was my first book, and my colleagues were so helpful in helping me understand the process of authoring a textbook,” she said, “it was a great experience, and we are working on another one!” Along with the prestige of co-authoring a textbook, Kernek and her colleagues wanted to stress the affordability of the book. Since becoming a professor, she began to notice that students would try and forgo the book in a course only to fail, or perform very badly. She said, “I think this text offers timely subject matter and affordability.”

In addition to her position at SE and being an active marketing consultant, her family owns and operates three retail businesses. Going forward, she aspires to publish a new textbook, as well as continuing to care for the students at Southeastern, their lives, and the community.
