Meeting called to order at 2:00 pm
Welcome and introductions.
Approval of minutes from 9 February 2004 meeting
The Chair opened the discussion concerning motivation, or lack there of, of students participating in mid-level assessment testing earlier in the month. Several ideas were discussed to increase motivation including providing: (1) scholarships to students receiving the highest scores on the ACT CAAP tests, (2) t-shirts to all participants; and (3) snacks and drinks to participants on mid-level assessment day. The Chair indicated that $12,000 would be requested in the general education budget for scholarships for the 2004-2005 AY.
The Chair discussed the overall proposed budget for general education with Council Members: the request was for $31,160 including $9,000 supplies and materials; $5,000 travel; $100 postage; $300 on-campus printing; $3,000 regular student wages; $60 student benefits; $1,500 computer for student worker; $200 file cabinet; $10,000 in-state tuition waivers; $2,000 out-of-state scholarships. If approved, this would be the first budget dedicated exclusively to general education. In the past, funds used for general education initiatives were reallocated from other budgets (e.g., assessment and academic affairs).
The Chair updated the Council on progress made concerning the electronic portfolio for general education presented at last meeting. Council members reported that faculty and department chairs were supportive of any initiative that reduced paper work or facilitated the process of assessment. The Chair will continue to work with AVP Haycock to develop electronic portfolio.
The Chair initiated an open discussion on outcomes/objectives of general education. Again, many things were discussed but not much progress was made.
The Council reviewed OSRHE guidelines for general education and continued the discussion on modification of goals/objectives of general education.
Next meeting will be held at 2:00 pm on 12 April 2004 in BS 204.
